Full sliding doors or not

Current glazing design is a picture window, then entrance door, then sliding door, covering a width of 5670mm, with 2100mm height. The reason is we use the rear entrance all the time, so needed a door. However, I'm wondering whether a full four panel sliding door, with the two centre panels sliding to either side, would be better? Would this be practical to slide one door open for regular access?

Worked out how to get an image from PDF plans. This shows the current glazing plan, the sliding door continues to the RHS behind the screening. There is a small covered area in front of the door, behind the screening.

We've just paid the deposit on some grey external/white internal aluminium bifolds. Managed to find a company who had one on display so got to have a good feel for how it all worked. I couldn't bring myself to buy one that I'd not seen! It's just a shame very few companies who sell them have showrooms, out of the 8 I rang only two could show me their product!

We would advise it is completely dependant on the space and your requirements. Walk-in wardrobes look great if they are kept tidy, however a plus for having doors is that it can conceal any mess and give more protection for clothing. Another trend for walk-in wardrobes is to have smoked glass doors mixed with open elements this could also work with matt lacquered doors. Alternatively you could choose to have open elements for items such as bags, shoes or coats (things you know that are easy to keep tidy) then hinged doors for other modules.

French doors are lovely, especially in a period home, but they do need space to open out into the garden. I had that dilemma too as my lower patio is quite small and French doors would have hit the garden furniture outside. I decided on sliders and I’m glad I did. They are our back door! They are very secure and the locking mechanism locks in 6 places so would be impossible to lift out. Of course a burglar could smash the glass to get in but that would create a hell of a racket. My sliders are 6 ft wide. I’m not so sure about removing your access gates, even with a resident permit. People do love off road parking so a bonus when or if you ever sell the house.

A four panel sliding door might risk there being too much frame in the picture window. What about a 2 pane sliding patio window with a 'Lift and Slide' mechanism to make opening them easier? Reynaers are worth checking out for patio windows
