Kitchen island worktop

Liking th look of quartz worktops as opposed to granite but concerned about fading. The workstation island is going to be under a large lantern window. Any experience of difficulty with quartz please?

No experience but I think both Quartz and natural stone that has been treated with resins can fade. Can you not look at a glass or film/coating that blocks the UV? I'd speak to the supplier in any case to discuss concerns

Hi I recognise that plan! Good to see you on another advice forum. Duropal make I think around 6 of their colours of laminate worktop upto 1200mm in depth. Really it all depends on where you are getting your kitchen from and their suppliers. For example if we are getting laminate worktop from a UK supplier then we get it from a 'cut and edge' worktop supplier, not just a 'blank' board supplier. A cut and edge worktop supplier will supply laminate worktop to a plan we provide, they will pre cut the masons mitre joints and profile all the edges. This is so much better than the fitter cutting blanks and gluing on laminate edges. I know from previous discussions on the other forum you were looking at Schuller kitchens, I assume this is not your choice now as you would not have these problems you are talking about with the laminate worktop, because Schuller have a huge range of laminate worktops, with lots of edge options and in all sizes! Anyway, ask your kitchen man about getting a price for the laminate worktop from a cut and edge specialist. CK

Agree with one plan each situation is slightly different. Depends for example how big the island is. In my current kitchen the gap is 1.2 but I don’t it’s ideal I think it’s slightly too big but I based it on lining up with patio doors.

I think you have just a little too much of a good thing going on with the dark colours. The floor isn't do you any favours as it competes with the wood on the cabinets, so I would lighten up the floor. I would make the area beyond the fridge in to a pantry, it's a great area. I would also consider, re-tiling using a lighter plain tile all over. I'd tone down the black as it's also, the darkest colour you can have and it too is adding to the lack of light. Consider maybe a recycler bin like this one in stainless steel instead of the two cylindrical black ones. We have one of these:- Simple Human Bin A pale gloss metro tile will bounce the light aroundIf you can change the work top for something a lot lighter and glossy too. That would help enormously. However, it's a big job and not for everyone. I honestly think the thing that would make the most difference is the floor. It's sucking the light out. Here's a kitchen like yours on pale cream gloss porcelain tile. Maybe take out the black bar stools and go for a a paler colour with a soft finish.

Yes, you're definitely looking at legs for that distance. obviously the join will be the weakest point so make sure this is well supported too. Look at the moisture content for kiln dried wood, this is what most wooden tops are to prevent warping and movement in the future. If possible, bring the wood inside the house at least a week beforehand and leave it flat somewhere so it can acclimatise before fixing. good luck

Our particular suppliers of Quartz do not reccomend installing quartz outside/somewhere with long term or excessive sun exposure. Its also not included in their warranty as prolonged UV ray exposure has not been tested. But best to talk to your supplier directly. If you are concerned have you thought about a Neolith worktop? Since the color is 100% natural, it does not deteriorate due to exposure to the sun. Good luck!

You could also consider a porcelain style worktop but the cost is higher- personally I would have the glass in the lantern upgraded to a UV filtering one ( if it is going in now it might already be the better glass)
