Flat or low profile sockets?

I am renovating my Victorian terrace and require a full rewire. Any advice on whether flat plate or low profile sockets are the most practical would be appreciated.

I am having a couple of rooms replastered when the electrics are complete along with all chases patched. Other plastering and decoration will take place at a later date. Depending on the condition of the walls they might not even need plastering so it is not even a case of the electrician setting out the back boxes to accommodate another few mm.

Although I think flat plate look best I wonder whether a low profile sockets will give me more tolerance if/once additional plastering and decoration is undertaken later.

I know people will suggest, "speak to your electrician" however they will always suggest non-flat as it requires less work to install the back boxes.

I welcome your thoughts/experiences.

When installing sockets we always use 35mm deep boxes as this covers all types of covers

Flat plate sockets look good as long as the walls are flat

Low profile sockets will install better if back boxes are 25mm deep

This years trends seem to be Antique brass and different metal colours

BG Nexus range and they have US Beautiful web - sockets with USB ports

The walls will be smooth and flat, either as existing or due to being replastered.

I just worried if the front face of the back box was installed flush with the existing walls and then I got the walls re-skimmed in another 6 months I might have an issue re-sitting the front face against the plaster which will now be a few mm further out than the face of the back box. I guess the same could be said for any socket face plate but I feel as though flat face are less forgiving .

mrshste ... and I thought I was alone in disliking en suites for the same reason! I said this to a real estate agent yesterday and he looked totally confused ... like I was a martian from another planet ... it did make me laugh. I also agree with you re modern bland supposed minimalism ... although I love the original concept of minimalism which was anything but bland or even very white.

So your suggesting wall lights and lamps only. No recessed spots or led strips along beams? We will be having tv unit in alcove furthest from window and a sofa facing fireplace just placed in front of doors on either side. The other half of the room will be a dining area temporarily. Will wall lights be enough and how many? I prefer symmetry in my rooms also. The ceiling to floor is approx 7ft. I’ve read to make a room look higher than it is uplighters are best is this so? If our plans work out the dining area will eventually turn into a quiet area with comfy chairs bookcase etc. My husband is not a fan of wall lights says it restricts you if u want to change furniture around. I love them but with a low ceiling I am unsure how high up they should be not just for best lighting but for furniture arrangement and if they are on a wall where u walk could be an obstacle? I have also posted about my spiral staircase but I put it in the topic design dilemmas but it is about lighting also.

Hi Artform. No worries, completely understand your advice. We were originally going to go for a straight run along the left with an island, but because our house is angled on the right that did not leave much space for a dining table. We have purposefully left that space in the middle to allow us some flexibility with the room in the future - in case we want to add a small island/chefs table at some point, or change the orientation of the dining table. The decision stemmed from the idea of having separate spaces in the kitchen, I liked the idea of the kitchen/cooking area being at the back of the room (which will be slightly lacking natural light) with the dining area being at the front as we are having bi-fold doors fitted to go out into the garden and thought this would make for a lovely dining space when the doors are opened fully in the summer. The room in question is not massive so the middle space isn't that big at all, we really had to weigh up whether we wanted an island or a large dining table I didn't want the room to be cramped by squeezing both in. By leaving it like this we can always add additional cupboards along the left wall if we wanted to or even still add an island at some point. The dining table was really important to us though hence our decision. Regarding the 3 cabinets on the left, thanks to the lovely angle we have along that wall, it is not possible to have them straight unless we move the doorframe more to the left. In reality that gap and small wall you see on the left hand side of the kitchen door does not exist, the cupboards come flush so we cannot move the wall. So we'll just have to have one cupboard at an angle unfortunately. Our kitchen designers have shown us what this looks like in 3D imaging and I don't have any issues with the final product. Hi Martin, is the ceiling flat or pitched? If it is pitched recessed spotlights aren't always the best solution because even if they are adjustable they will create glare when recessed on the angle of the pitch. Bedside wall lights are a good idea to create a soft light at the bedside.
