To balance hard modern lines and surfaces I agree that anything that adds 'life' to the room is good i.e. anything colourful, organic, or that reflects individual character. So I would go with some wooden items and/ or a wooden floor, plants to bring life, colourful or interesting textures in the soft furnishings. You don't have to go all out with colourful furniture. You can use cushions and rugs for this and the best thing is they can be changed fairly easily if you fancy a new look at a later stage. Original artwork (painting or sculpture) or interesting lamps are great if you can afford. Photos and books (!) bring personality and show that real people do live here. My rule of thumb is that you don't want your home to look like a showhouse. You want it to have life and to reflect your personality. You don't have to go all crazy cat-lady with loads of kooky clutter but a few elements to break up the monotony will really help. Stellahome, your house looks lovely btw! I also love the idea of using interesting or asymmetrical bookcases. You could get a carpenter to knock up something interesting or better yet, do it yourself if you have the skills.

Hello Pippa, Yes Minnie's right.. Calming colours that naturally compliment like several shades of 1 colour...So you may like a particular shade like pink for example and see colour variations below.. From Little Greene in this case... So a varying degree of colour that compliments and accents for the walls and wood work.. Chalky and matt are best... Then you can add complimentary and contrasting tones for bedding soft furnishings like pale greys or silvers with white linens.. or stone colours and woods.. Keep flooring light and paint the ceiling a lovely warm colour like Whitening by LG again.. If you're laying flooring with rugs, keep to a similar colour, that way the floor looks expansive rather than defined.. Mood lighting with table lamps or wall lighting.. with soft warm white bulbs gives a calm and warm light as opposed to bright white and from a central single pendant.. : ) )

The smart compact kitchen is an ingenious use of limited space! We love the innovative design and the different levels and widths of the shelves make it both interesting to look at and functional. All of the projects are very impressive, the transformations are all pretty amazing and should definitely provide inspiration to anyone looking to do similar projects. I was personally torn between the country kitchen and the sloping garden, in the end my vote went to the sloping garden project, the transformation from a blank awkward looking area to such a cleverly designed and attractive space is amazing.
