Need Reeded Glass Privacy Screen

We have a floor to ceiling narrow window in the bathroom which does not provide adequate privacy screening, particularly at night. Since the glass is not flat, can window films still work? If not, what is the best way to provide privacy without resorting to blinds or shades?

Hi Carol,

This is a tricky one. Window films won't stick very well to a textured glass surface. The only solution that we came up with is that it may be possible to buy a thin (around 5mm) piece of acrylic and get it cut to size to fit inside the window frame on the inside. You would then be able to fit window film to that. Hope that helps.

In a bathroom window, its a really good idea to use stained glass as it is great for adding privacy. It can be secondary glazed, and fitted internally, and there are some really good designs that are not too shabby that can add a real feature to your home. Worth a thought?

Thanks so much everyone - this has been great. Sorry for the lack of response - been flat out!!!! It must be hard for you American guys to work on such old English designs.... The ideas have gradually culminated into what really would look good on the house. Ourfarmhouse - these are absolutely great ideas, and thanks Everything Beautiful for getting the jist and putting the ideas onto the house image - nothing like seeing an actual design on your own home. We've got an architech working on it, and he's keen on the iron-wrought idea... but we're not sure. Basically toss-up with this and Everything Beautiful's design (2 above). Going with a four-pannel door, but would like to incorporate some glass somewhere! Possibly a panel above with the house name engraved on it?? Victoria - absolutely right...! We don't need to sit outside with the weather.......... say no more! Just wanting something to cover yourself while you're unlocking the door. We've also done a tour of the local areas, and found a couple of porches - amazing what you find right on your doorstep! Will attach pics shortly...

I do feel for you, a similar thing has happened where I live. Two storey flats overlooking pensioners bungalows. Privacy has gone and light is reduced. Complaints were put in, a petition was put in but 42 flats brings in a lot of revenue for the local council. The value of our property has dropped as a result of this - I paid a premium to buy the place as we were not overlooked at all previously. It is heart breaking and soul destroying, one of the neighbours succumbed to the depression and has now been taken into care. A chap moved into the upper flat across the road from me and as the flats are so close I can see he has a mole the size of a new penny on his left shoulder!! Scuze me for passing on this rather personal information - that is how close the flats are and the lack of privacy on both sides. I do not want to move and lose money, am too old to be doing with the upheaval anyway. These are sad times we live in.

Bearing in mind that you have young children, the focus of the garden in my opinion should be on them. A small patio/dining/relaxing area for adults near the house, and perhaps also at the end of the garden would be lovely. I would also have most of the garden redone in grass (real grass!) with room to play. And I would keep the fence... its the most practical having children near a river, even if they're not babies anymore. I would probably break up the unusual shape of the garden with a few pots, planters and borders 'sticking' out into the garden so the eye is drawn away from the sharp, narrow end. I agree with what was said above though about just living with the space for a bit and seeing how you use it.

1. My house will become like a greenhouse and get extremely hot in the Summer. Yes, this is a real risk. As part of the Building Regulations package a SAP calculation will need to be completed and a separate sub-calculation that assesses heat gain also completed. If the heat gain calc doesn't pass you may have to introduce shading, use heat reflective solar control glass [usually tinted] or reduce the amount of glass. Regardless of what the calc says I'd recommend using solar control glass as it always gets hotter than you think. Another option to consider, assuming you are installing MVHR [mechanical ventilation with heat recovery], is summer shut off function so the heat exchanger is not used so cooler air introduced. 2. Would lose heat in the winter as glass may not be as efficient as brick. Shouldn't be a problem as new modern windows [possibly triple glazed?] are very energy efficient. Although not as good as walls, roofs etc. they are very good. The whole house average energy consumption is also calculated so if lots of glass other methods are used to compensate such as more insulation elsewhere or better heating / energy sources. 3. Security is compromised. Might be a problem so ensure all glazing, windows and doors are PAS 24 / Secured by Design standard for entire assembly, frames, locks and glass etc. Laminated security glass etc. High performance solar control glass with enhanced security performance = expensive glass etc. The design looks nice and would lend itself nicely to timber frame construction.
