Living/dining room design - advise needed!

Hello everyone!
We're in process of decorating our living/dining room and even though majority of the furniture is more or less selected, for some reason it feels that something is missing or isn't just right. Therefore I'd like to ask you guys for an advise and fresh opinions for our project.
To start with, we are trying to achieve a modern English country look, with cottage influence but which doesn't look too shabby. We want a cosy, cute, but also smart looking room which feels refreshing, relaxing, inviting and light.
Main colours: white, grey, cream and a bit of purple (this might be changed perhaps...)
I was also looking at feng shui for colour advise and therefore will add a floor plan with directions on it..but mainly our room is facing West.
So far we already got dining set and tv unit in place, also sofa and footstool are ordered. We are also thinking of adding a bookcase or a sideboard and/or nest of tables from the same range as tv unit.
We were considering of adding a ladder shelves in oak and perhaps some extra lighting, plants and a gallery wall.
One of the major dilemmas I've got now is curtains and a rug!
We already bought Laura Ashley Pussy Willow Natural curtains, which in theory merge all of the colours we have, but for some reason I'm not sure if these curtains are exactly what we need...colour wise they look nice, but I'm not sure about the pattern..
I was also thinking about grey vintage looking rug, but perhaps it would clash with the curtain?
I'm adding as many pictures as I can for your review..

We also ordered one cushion in footstools fabric and one striped for interest..

Comments (16)Have you thought of rearranging the furniture so the tv isn't the focal point? Furniture against walls can make a room appear smaller. If the budget permits I would add a coffee table to bring furniture into the middle of the room. I would also add a mirror to the dining area to bounce light and maybe install a low hanging pendant light over the table. I would also choose a neutral coloured rug as using a single colour for an item becomes the focal point. Grey is a good modern neutral for walls. If you want to use paper on a smaller wall choose a small pattern that won't date unless you don't mind repapering to keep it up to date. There are some really fantastic papers around at the moment such as chinoiserie, bold contemporary and typography but it depends on your preferred style? Maybe use plain (not patterned as this may date or your taste will change) velvet or silk curtains to soften the room. Use different colours and textures for the accessories to avoid block colours as per comment above. Comments (9)A Roman blind is a good idea or curtains that hang outside of the window recess when open to allow maximum light to pour in. Whichever you choose, make sure they are hung high near the ceiling to make the ceiling feel higher up. What do you use the conservatory for? Is the door in the second photo the main entrance into the room? Would the table fit comfortably nearer the window end of the room instead? Then the sofa could go to the other end of the space - not sure if it fits. It's hard to see how the layout works from the photos and without the measurements or a floor plan. Alternatively, would the sofa fit it you turned it so that it faces the centre of the room rather than the window? I'd hang the seaweed mirror above the sideboard or behind the sofa (depending on final layout) and change the floor lamp to one which reaches over into the living space. Also, you need a much larger rug for the living space. The mirror and art are hung too high at the moment. After the layout is decided then you can think about maybe using wallpaper on one wall. Comments (2)Personally, I think corner sofas really restrict positioning and getting 2 gives you a lot more flexibility. Re the radiators, I would try and avoid putting any behind the sofa on the right hand side as the sofa will soak up lots of the heat. Instead I would suggest going for a vertical model instead and putting it to the side of the French doors. Comments (10)Thank you for your response. We had plans pretty finalised until we found out that we can keep just that long wall into the large space as it is a load-bearing. There is an opportunity to put a door in though. I am attaching what it looked like with all the walls that we can now remove. We have also been tinkering with ideas which I am adding as well. I added some comments on the plans as well. What we want to have is a dining area with a large table that seats 8-10 people. We want enough space for two people to work and cook in the kitchen. Thus, we were thinking of an island or an L-shape workspace coming out. We'd like to have a utility room to have space for all the cleaning utensils. Washer and Dryer will be upstairs in a separate laundry room. The living room is nothing formal but an area to relax and watch TV. 7 years agoHi. The colours all work well together. I like the pussy willow fabric. I also love it mixed with eucalyptus for on the dining table! M&s are selling real pussy willow ATM that lasts for ages or they do artificial. I would go for a jute or sisal rug, it will tone well with the floor, adds texture and really works for a modern country look. I think you need a mirror in there somewhere. This one is from Laura Ashley. Perhaps behind the sofa without knowing it's dimensions and I think the tv is low so won't be reflected! I'd also add a textured throw over the arm of a sofa. I might hold off on ordering more furniture until everything has arrived so you know what fits. However I would be tempted to add a brass/gold legged side table as the metallic will lift it. There are loads around ATM. Green also works well with your colour scheme for a potted plant or for art etc

7 years agoHi all, just wanted to update on our progress..we had to change curtains a few times and we ended up with Corby Silver Check from Laura Ashley.
They look really nice and give that cottage feel we were after but now sofa seems a bit too brown!!!
I'm losing my mind over this..
Anyway, we decided to try a Bexley silver rug to somehow bring it all together..do you think it will work? Is there anything we should change?? Have we made a major mistake in changing those curtains?

7 years agoHi. It looks good. The curtains seem to have a slight lilac undertone. I would look at the gosford cushion which has lilac and plum tones in. I think a floral would also help to break up all the linear patterns. LA don't have a sale on ATM So you might be able to pick up cushions on eBay as you can often find them in LA fabrics

7 years agoGuys, please help!! Is it just me so something is still off??..is everything too bland...?
Today we have received our rug and some other accessories.. and it seems that cushions and a throw are too much, so will return those...and will use light purple throw.
But for some reason I have a feeling that something isn't just right..have I gone completely mad?..
Please let me know what you think of this..! And apologies about the dog, he just loves being in a centre of everything :) thank you!!!!

7 years agoGreat idea, but my hubby is against wallpaper... :/ ordered this chair to add some interest but not too sure if all of the grey shades would look good together...I'm overthinking I guess but would you change anything here???
