Wood, aluminium or composite front door for a mock tudor house
Hi,
We are fitting a new front door (frame of 1150 mm x 2200 mm) and wanted advice/suggestions on a couple of things:
1. Dark wooden door looks really nice but I am not sure how often will we have to treat it and how much maintenance it will require. Would an aluminium or a composite door look good? None of the neighbours have modern aluminium doors and it does not seem to go with the look of the house.
2. At the moment, the front door is inset by almost 2 ft, so we are also bringing the door to the front of the house so that its flush with the front wall. What sort of canopy would you advice on? What else would you recommend so that the look does not get spoilt.

Wood doors are attractive and full of character but tend to wear and discolour easily.
I would suggest a composite front door with a wood grain finish.
As for the canopy I think that's a brilliant idea, having an over door canopy with black timber frame detail will give your exterior definition.

Comments (49)I think you should stay within house style. Contemporary design may be too much. Color should match with your house facades and windows. Maybe something like this? Solid wooden door with glass in the middle. Graffiti grey color. Could be quite good match with any colours (specially with your bricks facade)....See MoreFront door advice? Comments (15)I agree with darker - I think the reason the light door PP posted looks good is the style. A light colour with a modern design wouldn't have the same effect. This a Cromwellian house in Herefordshire fitted with one of our stainless steel Letterplates and the door colour looks great with the black and white. The porch timber is paler than the rest of the house timbers (you can just see the black window frame to the right) and is a modern addition but as it's still a shade of grey it all works well together. Comments (4)I love a Tudor-style home (we used to live in one in the States). This house is gorgeous! We actually had similar colours in the States and painted our door a green colour (similar to the attached). It's Green Smoke from Farrow & Ball and I also attached an image showing some colours it goes well with (your house colours). I love a painted door and finding a colour you like adds some of your personality to the front of the house (and might even make you happy every time you see it:). 7 years agoHi Wood door would look lovely, but not something we do, but we do composite and aluminium. I think composite will be near as wood and less maintenance.... here are some composite and aluminium doors...
