What is your ideal holiday type?

With the weekend fast approaching, it's only natural to daydream about holiday destinations on Fridays!

But if you were going away this weekend - where would we find you?

Would you be lazing by the sea (or poolside!) soaking in the sun, or would you be doing the total opposite and getting active on the slopes? Would you be walking around map-in-hand, immersing yourself in the sights, sounds and history of a city? Perhaps you already live in a bustling city, and your idea of a break is an escape to the countryside.

I'm fortunate enough to have both Summer and Winter holidays, so very difficult to chose my ideal.... In Winter I adore skiing and all social activities involving that, and in Summer I adore the beach, the sea, the sun, BBQ's and all those social activities as well. But I also enjoy long walks in the country side on a crisp Spring day, or in a beautiful Autumn forest enjoying the different colours as the trees and plants go to sleep.

As an outdoor person, I really find it difficult answering this question, so choosing "other" for me was the only answer I could give.

Of course I also enjoy Cities - London, Paris, New York and Milan, Cape Town, Nice, St. Petersburg. Oh dear, so many places to see, so little time :-))

@Daniela Provvedi - it is hard to just pick one isn't it! Having never been skiing I feel the same way but towards city/beach holidays. Beaches for the ultimate relaxation, cities for food and sightseeing!

Hi @Jerry Evans thanks for the thoughtful reply - all right on target. We bought the house with the newly installed windows, so the contract was with the previous owners - not us. Would be nice if Crittall would honour their guarantee or even offer any help but they've yet to do the decent thing. They will not toss their installer under the bus for mis-selling them, nor will they obviously go on record saying they're not suitable for a marine/coastal environment. We're happy to be their test lab!. With respect to condensation the thermal break question is a good one - thanks. If there is one it's not visible and seems woefully ineffective. We have trickle ventilation for the house as a whole but it doesn't reach the windows unfortunately. We do have all the usual extractors and we're starting to look at further air circulation/ventilation solutions. Cheers Bill

Weekly? Oh, how I wish it were only weekly. I'm out there nearly every day culling the three-cornered leek that has reappeared as a thick blanket despite me culling it in the first spring I was here, in my new house, then finding it had reappeared hugely aggressively last year and now, in my third spring, it's even thicker and even more widespread - and is now not only in the flower beds but also in the lawn, thick along the edge, scattered within it. Front and back. It takes about two hours to clear about a square yard - digging under the bulbs; banging off the (very good, I've been told) soil in which there are always several earthworms which I need to hang on to (obviously); then picking out the tiniest bulbs left behind. I don't think I can ever finish it this year - as happened last year - which means the problem will go on for decades. I don't really have the time (I need to work, I need a life beyond digging and clearing). The only solution I can think of is to bring in help but my budget won't allow that. I value having lawn so paving it over isn't an option. I will have less planting space, which will eventually mean less weeding, but it's not something I can do right now - I've too much to do to bring the indoors up to date. I disagree with Jo DP. The previous owners had a keep it wild policy and now I have this big problem with a massively invasive plant. And, yes, I have tried using it in recipes - it really isn't worth the effort of keeping it under control (to have a limited supply). I'm an experienced and adventurous cook and three-cornered leek is an overrated ingredient, even though it's free and in my garden.

It would always vary depending on where I was going and why. A leisurely stroll with the dogs is one thing, doing the weekly shop is another, as would be travelling from home to the city. My ideal would be to be transported in a chauffeur driven 1930s Rolls Royce Phantom III limousine, but that's never going to happen.

if you have an Apple store close to you, they have FREE workshops during the summer holidays for 8-12 year olds http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/learn/youth/ if you a parent lucky enough to be able to spend the summer holidays with your children and need ideas to keep them entertained, lots of city museums (not just london - think Chester, Liverpool, Manchester, etc) have days for children, usually free (or just a few £), where there are all sorts of activities or treasure hunts throughout the museum - not something you normally think about but a different day for the kids. Take a packed lunch or picnic to eat in a nearby park - very cheap day out! The same goes for National Trust properties, just google any that are close to you.
