Cushions and Abstract Art to match Afghan Rug

Hey lovely people, need help please.

We bought this red corner sofa set:

before my husband slapped me with a major design challenge to work around his huge, old Afghan rug.

Tried to do some initial research online but I'm still at a loss. I keep on getting warnings that it takes more advanced styling skills to deal with such a piece, but I chucking or selling it are not exactly part of my options, so could really use some advice.

I suppose I need to 'echo' some of the colors that are on the rug for the cushions? Should they be entirely plain (on a plain sofa) or what kind of prints would work? How many (of each color) should I add? How do I work with textures (sofa is polyester with a bit of sheen to it)?

How about the art behind the sofa? I am drawn to palette knife abstracts such as the pegs below (credits to the Etsy seller), but don't quite know what dominant colors I should go for? I just don't want things to look a bit too much, all at once!

The space looks like this. Essentially, the rug will be placed on the left hand side. Not much choice, but it will sadly take up the entire living room (almost!)

Pegs and ideas are all welcome and very much appreciated. Even better if they can be sourced from within the UK.

I think you'll notice it less than you think. Is that your room? Can you take a photo with it in position?

I have attached a couple of pics for inspiration. I like the darker furniture to tone down all that red a bit. I would probably live with the rug for a bit before deciding on art, but the second picture could possibly work.

Thank you, Jen. That is the actual photo of the space (from the previous owners), so we just copied the color and style of the sofa. I am a bit sad about covering the wooden floor (imagine the left half of this photo with the Afghan rug), but I don't want to argue about not using it. I really like your point on contrasting with a darker shade to tone the red a bit, and giving ourselves some time before buying the appropriate art :) Thanks!

I recommend, because of the Spanish/ Mexican themes I can spot within the fireplace I would add colourful tiles around the fireplace to make it the centre of attention and to make it more interesting. However, considering that this is a living a would recommend terracotta or a warm subtle vermillion colour, or if you prefer bright colours I would either go with turquoise, pink, red, green or dark blue. I would not recommend yellow as yellow is a bit garish and would not compliment the fireplace whatsoever. The same with gold really. Personally I would choose red for the walls :) Hope this helps :) Dark wooden furniture might also go with the colours :) A mirror above the fireplace would also add a lovely touch by extending the lights so it wouldn't be too dark :)

We had a similar dilemma in that our dogs bless them ruin pretty much any rug on the market !. Having searched high and low and having gone through many, i'm happy to say that we have now had two rugs for around 18 months that still look like new. They are literally indestructable, plush, yet hard wearing and you can sponge them and wash them. This is the closest i can come to finding one online - but am willing to go throught my filing for the exact one! natural wool rug

The big red rug had to go (we still don't know where to sell it), it ended up taking up the entire space, covering the wooden floor. The husband was heartbroken--it was from his flat as a bachelor, but we couldn't make it work. Yay! Would love to take you up on that offer because we are quite overwhelmed and don't quite know where to start!

That rug is gorgeous. I see you already have a cushion in the aqua, so you could add the yellow too, or the pink to be very daring! I love colour, I have a Persian rug too, but I’m sure others will say to keep it calmer. I really think the picture is lovely too. I’d hang it in the middle of the sofa, not too high, eye level is best. As the rug is quite folksy/boho I think you can go quite colourful with the cushions. Velvet is always nice but you could add a few patterned cushions too. Here’s some images, the last one is a bit out there but I love that look.

Very nice space you have there, seems very light and bright.

I love the choice of art and the reds are really add warmth to the room.

I found some pictures that I thought could help tie in the various pieces, and tried my best to create some representation to see what it looks like.

Red sofa and reds in the carpet with darker pillows to town it down.

I liked the dark wall and plants.

The red in the sofa and the rustic furniture with the colours in the pictures (similar to the ones you already have) was very striking to me.

A very rough idea of the above elements incorporated.

Adding some greenery in the form of a plant could also add some nice texture to the room.
