Intelligent lighting was something we saw to be very popular last year, and for very good reason!

As it becomes more mainstream and affordable we foresee most renovation projects employing an element of control in primary living spaces!

But, as choice grows, which system should you choose?

Here are some suggestions from our lighting team at Avinu:

Controller compatibility and light fittings : LEDS should be tested before you buy.
How many circuits? Consider a small controller for main living areas, or whole-house to reap the full benefits of a larger dedicated system.
Have you cabled? If you have a retro-fit then there are great wireless controllers. However, cabling is best!
Flexibility : wire for both traditional and intelligent systems where you can.
Power Saving : don't forget to include occupancy sensors for turning lights off when rooms are vacated.

I thought I'd update everyone as to what we settled on as most of you won't have seen the finished post. Went went for Little Greene French Pale Grey on the walls and then a Grey Quartz worktop which had worked quite well. To stop it from being clinical, we opted for some textured wallpaper in the dining area which is Bala Storm (I think) from John Lewis. We then added some natural tones using a wooden table, and then Vitra chairs. Along with wooden fruit bowl etc. The main window will have wooden venetian blinds, and the bay windows will probably be done in a darker grey material as the perfect fit style blinds you find in conservatories

What would our 1930s terrace interiors have looked like?

We bought a 1930's house recently in west London. There were a number of styles prevalent during this time usually falling into 1 of 3 categories - art deco (the one everyone knows about), mock-tudorbeathen which as the name suggests has tudor beams, oak iron studded front doors and often oversized fireplaces too. Finally there were the modernist homes with a focus on modern materials (think lino, curved glass crittal windows and tubular steel frame chairs etc. For me however its some of the smaller architectural details that I love in 1930's houses - lead light windows (sometimes with stained glass), picture rails in every room, 1 over 3 panel doors with high bakelite or brass knob handles and best of all original herringbone parquet floors! These are the things I've chosen to focus on in our house without going all out 1930's! Also as ASVInteriors mentioned there is also an element of arts and crafts to some of the 1930's homes which can often be seen in pretty entranceway doors/windows, quality inset kitchen cabinet doors/drawers, panelled cupboards and sometimes board and batten type hallways. I found the original brochure with illustrations for the homes built local to us from when they were first constructed which gives a great idea of what the interiors would have been like originally. I recently carpeted my toddlers room and originally I wanted hard flooring but I must say I'm glad I didn't. I think carpet would be much more comfortable for your little boy to be playing on for years to come. Don't spend too much ;) I was wiping sick off mine the other week and if it was a very expensive carpet I would have been nervous as hell. Luckily it all came out fine! I know both carpet and wood have pros and cons so I guess you need to weigh it up whilst making sure you put comfort and practicality over how it looks (boring I know...) you would need a lovely thick rug over your wood floor which would be a nice touch to the nursery...

Hiya Jill, thanks for sending those images over. In response to your first question about your bedroom, I can think of a couple of solutions that may work. The first is the same solution as my previous French window answer to @montbray and fit something that moves with the window, either a Pleated or a Venetian which operate under tension and open with a thumb tab rather than a cord. Alternatively, it would look quite nice if a blind, particularly a Roman blind was fitted right to the top of the wall above the window, at the ceiling. This will allow the blind to be ‘dressed’ to form a valance effect above the window when the blind is open, giving full view from, and use of the window and when it is closed, it will give the illusion of the window being taller. In the case of your bathroom blind, you might like to try a waterproof Roller blind made from PVC fabric. Alternatively, Faux wood blinds are a really great idea, as they have all the look of traditional Wooden blinds, but won't warp in wet or steamy conditions. Admittedly, it is a difficult window to dress and there are not a lot of options, but hopefully, these will give you some ideas. Sarah
