Help with new kitchen design - I can't get it to work!!!!!!

Builder is about to knock through from the dining to the kitchen - at the moment we have to go from the kitchen through the living room to get to the dining room! But I can't get the kitchen to work with the knock through......the knock through can be made smaller or bigger or even changed to just french doors because I have 6 weeks before the builder can start!

The fireplace (top left) is such wasted space and I can't put much either side of it, at the moment there are two narrow bench seats along the walls either side of it - they are only 40 cm deep and so I could replace them with shelving or shallow cupboards but the fireplace has to stay where it is!

I need more cupboard space and worktop space.

I have been trying to come up with something that works and I would love an island but I just can't get anything to work :(

Hi there. I would get rid of the wall completely and then create a peninsula coming out from the wall run of kitchen into the space.

You can either have this thinner as a breakfast bar or if there is space then the oven.
I create a lot of 3D's for customers to visualise the space to make they get it right before they pay for big changes with things like kitchens which can often be very expensive to reverse.

You have a great space so I am sure with some playing around and persistence you can get a space you love! Thanks, Gina

Hi Clare. I can't design kitchens so.. I'd take the walls out. It looks as if you have plenty of space for a Long Island (by eye it looks as if it should start where you've got the sink.). You could put the hob between the windows (check this out though as you shouldn't put gas directly under a window). Have the sink and dishwasher in the island. Then have your FF and ovens where you have the hob. If you encroach on the dining space a little it looks as if you could also fit a slim larder there. As an alternative put the hob in the island and centre the sink between the windows

Hi Heidi, I did a lot of work in Cannes last year, its a lovely location. The apartment looks wonderful, lots of strong architectural details, good proportions and light flooding into the space, a good start !! You really need someone you can discuss the project with who has the ability to visualise a concept based on your preferences and get those ideas down on paper. Your going to be inundated with designers who will pitch for this project. You need to consider four factors. 1 Do they have the ability to do the work. 2 Can they get on your wavelength so the interior captures your aspirations. 2 Are their fees reasonable and grounded in reality. 3 Can they present their ideas with artists impressions to illustrate their ideas. Taking into consideration all the above there is one final consideration. "Can you work with this person ?" This sounds like an abstract statement but an interior like this is the realisation of a dream for you, it should be a joy and as such you need to work with a designer that is both professional and on your wavelength from a personality perspective. On that basis you need to interview a quite a few designers. You need to be comfortable with that individual and have the confidence that he / she can produce a scheme that matches your tastes and have the ability to make it a reality. Sorry, I should have explained a little bit more. These are old units that I am simply moving. They are in very good condition. I have no problem with abandoning or not using some of the units. @ Jonathan that looks good. My intention is to get a 2400mm island as well. However, need to get these in first! @ Ellie I will do so when I have a chance a little later on! Thank you. The diagram I put up first shows the area where the units will go along with the window at the top. @rinq the larders are very tall. From memory they are approx 2.1m high. They both have openings of 1050mm for appliances. I havnt enquired about additional units but I'd much rather make the best out of what I have.

So sorry Daisy English is not impressed with Howdens, I purchased my kitchen from them in Bolton and could not be more pleased. I downsized from a large house with solid oak kitchen units and marble worktops (which after time do stain, whatever anyone tells you) and moved into a much smaller property. With the help of the designer at Howdens she and I designed a kitchen more suitable for my needs, all the units are just to my taste and the appliances are excellent even the oven cleans itself, everything is in there, dishwasher, fridge freezer, washing machine, microwave, second oven, pan drawers, pull out pantry, hob, and extractor fan and sooooo important wine rack, streamlined and so easy to keep clean. Incidentally I have no connection with Howdens, just a satisfied customer!

I had/have the same concerns with my kitchen, I inherited a Howdens white unit/black granite tops kitchen and looks lovely but cold! I have a dining table one end and have now put a very colourful rug down and its amazing how it warms the room up! Im not keen on colour at all but in this instance have had to capitulate! When I can afford to I intend to change black granite to a warmer wood. So I think as everyone else says your kitchen is beautiful and you just need to dress it with a few warm colours.

I would take out the whole wall and then get much more creative on the use of the whole space. Needs a bit a drama!!

Definitely lose the wall. Is the fireplace in use? If not, maybe you could also build in front of it. ( Maybe you could have the hob where the fireplace is in the corner? ) I see also that you've gone for a free standing fridge freezer taking up 1.6m of space. integrate in to the island or long run of units and have more units in the freed space. I think once you lose the wall then you've got plenty of room for your island, in face plenty of room for everything, just get a good kitchen designer on the case.
Maybe consider some irregular shapes if you can utilise the fireplace area?
I'm no kitchen designer, but those qualified i've seen come up with some amazing designs to unify odd spaces. !! Safe to say one thing though, i think it should be fairly easy to use more than the one wall.
