Clothing Store..? what would you do different?

Hello Everyone,

We wanted to share this photo and wanted everyone to comment on whether you would alter the design or keep it as it is? We are very curious to understand what would you feel by entering a store like this one. Do you think it's spacious or compact? do you think the lightings are bright or as it is?

I love the overhead lighting but there's so many it's quite distracting. I think there needs to be cabinet lighting as I wouldn't bother looking inside. If Theres room I'd add small leather footstools or benches at the end of the tie counters. Love the ceiling, is it copper sheeting? Whilst I love it I think there needs to be a contrast with the wood to break up all the warm tones like the dark wall at the end, although all the black clothes are doing quite a good job! I'd also add plants and/or stems, real or faux, to add a bit of life and maybe few accessories on the shelves. Are there mirrors anywhere? After all that though, I do love it and think it's spacious enough :)

We would like to thank you for taking an interest in our post. We admire your ideas and maybe we will convey them for any upcoming projects. Especially for a small sitting area and the whole adding nature into the design as it would create a more life into a store. The ceiling is not copper sheeting rather, it is Ash wood ply with oak polish. The picture cannot do justice to the reality of the interior design as it looks bolder than it actually is. Also, the store has mirrors. There are some mirrors in the changing rooms and I believe they included some on the walls after taking these photos.

If you are making a studio that you can actually paint in, then you'll need bare boards varnished or silk-gloss painted - otherwise your rug will get ruined! Also, think about a system for hanging your works - either permanently or whilst they dry. No point having a beautifully-painted wall getting pockmarked with pins or blutac, or never changing your wall display because you want to keep things 'perfect'. A system of 'washing lines' running parallell to and close to the walls works nicely. (Jute string and clothes pegs for an old-fashioned look; steel cable or malin wire and metal hooks for contemporary - yacht chandlers are the place to go for the latter. ) Have a look at Gwen John's paintings for colour inspiration. Even though her painted interiors were Parisian, her palette remained rather English. On damp - limewash is magic. It doesn't seal off damp but processes it. Years ago, I painted the north wall of my very unfinished kitchen in Normandy with limewash, but didn't do the patch where the sink was. When we took the sink out to put in the floor(...) we found that the unpainted patch was DRIPPING but the painted parts were dry.

What would you do with the oak panels in my dark hall?

We have the same type of panelling in our hall and it was oak the same as yours with an oak floor. It just started to feel quite dark and drab but we hesitated to to do anything for fear of messing it up. In the end we painted all the panelling in Farrows French grey, left the doors and floors wood and painted the sides of our staircase and the spindles in Farrows clunch but left the newel posts and the bannister rail as wood - looks like a different hallway - I have never regretted painting it

Hi Carolina, Yes, I'm not so fond of a leather couch anymore, find them too cold. if one is right then perhaps I could be persuaded. to be honest the storage furniture is more because I have a partner that likes everything hidden, and two young kids or it could just be specific features that i like from the pictures, i'm yet to see a picture that is my ideal living room. and the fires, I love a good rustic fire, so there's probably a lot of them saved! I do love the natural effect, I Love plants and have plenty unusual exotic succulents and cacti, Emmanuelle, thanks for the advise I learned that the hard way, the couch was a rushed decision swayed by the salesman, because we had a newborn - easy clean, quick delivery. which is why I am looking for inspiration now to get some idea of what I want so there isn't a mad dash to the shops for the first couch available. I do love the soft greens and blues, but I also love teal. forzaitalia thank you, that is the kitchen of my dreams! the colour and style (even the beams but that probably wont be feasible where we are buying). Laura Ashley is my favourite shop and is actually why I Love the country cottage/farmhouse feel plus my great grandparents stayed in a beautiful little farmhouse in Ireland and it was the best. colourhappy, That's what I thought with the instagram side, which is why I'm hesitant to go for inspiration there, I will have a look at that book you suggest, if I'm not going for a leather couch, which colour of sofa do you suggest?

Agree with Minnie, i think it's just the lighting overall that's a little too much. My wife's favourite colour is black, practically everything she owns is black - sometimes she branches out in to grey!

However, it needs lifting somehow, or it has a look of a shop just for those 'Men In Black'. It is very smart looking, and inviting at the same time as it's not too bright.

Maybe take down the middle row of garments on the right and change for floor to ceiling mirror to break it up a bit and bounce light about on a different level.

For me the biggest problem is ceiling height. For the size of the room it feels low and oppressive. The fussy, black ceiling lighting just draws attention to it. I've looked at all the images and (based on them) lighting seems to be a big problem. The whole space would come alive with better lighting. As for the rest of the design it's hard to comment as you don't say what 'look' you were aiming at or the market. However it does look quite bland. The interior overpowers the clothing rather than displaying it.

I think the lighting is too dim and it would be better for the fewer but brighter spotlights to be recessed rather than on tracks.
