TV above fireplace

Most fireplace installers I have spoken to have informed me that having a TV above fireplace is not a good idea. Are there any specific requirements to adhere to, so as to have this installation done. My wall width is maximum 1 metre width. Any suggestions?? Thanks Mark.

HI

we specialise in Technology and fireplaces. Yes, you can certainly put a Tv above a fireplace as long as certain processes are adhered to.

At least 400mm air gap between the top of the fire and the base of the TV, the TV should be recessed in it`s own enclosure.

Ventilation is a must at the bottom and top of the structure to release hot air in the chimney breast.

Once the cabling and area around the fire is fire proofed it will be fine.

Hi - we have been installing TVs above fireplaces for the past 15 years. Our recommendation is that you should ideally leave a 100cm clearance from the top of the fireplace to the bottom of the TV and fit a protuding mantelpiece to deflect/minimise the effect of heat thermals. If the wall is thin you will need to add heat insulation behind the TV. The picture shown shows us a example of a badly installed TV where no thought has been put into the interior design of that element in the room. I can almost guarantee a Technology Advisor was not involved in the project as they would have found a better solution for the finish. Sometime the area above the fireplace is the only space in the room the TV can go, and when its property thought out it can work.

If you have a beam which comes out a bit it will absorb some of the heat radiating upwards, I asked this question recently to an installer, he said there may be some degradation, its hard to predict but with a beam, and you can have wood or ceramic which absorbs more, then the damage is minimal. I know sometimes you just don't have the space to put it anywhere else!
