Kitchen lay out - inspiring ideas please!
Me again! Still procrastinating about the kitchen and cannot come to a decision. But now the walls have come down, feel we should be able to put something really nice together. Attached is a floor plan (green spots mark a couple of small windows). We want a kitchen and dining area - how would you lay it out? We've used magnet, wickes, B&Q and they've all come up with the same galley kitchen layout (with all the cabinets and appliances) at the front followed by a dining room (no cabinets). Kitchenmode helped us with a very interesting design including a peninsula but still waiting for that layout that clicks for us! Please help us if you can see this space differently!

Comments (2)I have Windows floor to ceiling both ends of my lounge and only one complete empty wall the opposite wall ,has large double doors with small walls each side. I find small pieces of furniture more suited to keep the feeling of light and space. I purchase a large sofa with a chaise end totally took up to much space and looked awful....See Moreany floor plan lay out design wizards out there
Comments (32)This is what I just sent as mentioned in above comments ^ I think after a lot of deliberation I am going to tone back my design quite a lot and hopefully build a glass conservatory out in the side return after doing the rest of the the renovations inside the back of the house. This is what I would like to do to begin with: With the intension of doing this after the the above is done: Im just trying to find out from a structural point of view if would I need to add a new steel RSJ in above where the current window opening is in order to put in the french windows, or bottom sliding Bi-folds in, and also find out if I have to move the boiler to make this design comply with building regs? If the answer is yes. Then I think I would bite the bullet and move the boiler and put a bigger opening in here to make something more like this: With a the possibility of adding something like this after the main works had been done: I would like the have a glass and steel conservatory sit on a steel conservatory base that is placed on concrete pads. 7 years agoThanks both. We almost feel like we've over thought it but just can't get the layout that speaks to us...
1) We want this to be a kitchen diner
2) Appliances will need to be in this room as no space elsewhere.
3) We are big foodies - love cooking/baking - we regularly entertain extended family and also enjoy hosting dinner parties. We have multiple children ranging from 9 to 1!
4) have included additional photos to show how the dining area currently leads to conservatory. The blue crosses mark where walls have been removed to open up the space.
As you can see previous owner had a galley kitchen followed by the dining area. And all the kitchen designers we've spoken to have followed this old layout. It may be that this is indeed the best layout but just wondered whether we were missing a trick given we've now opened up the space!

7 years agoHi whizzywig. Attached is a plan of the ground floor: to the left (marked dining room) we have converted into a Reception room. The conservatory sits at the far end of the space marked "Breakfast Room". Yes, the blue crosses mark walls which have come down. The green crosses mark the windows (so there are 2 small windows on the current sink wall and another small window in the Breakfast room space. Hope that helps! We have even questioned whether we should flip the kitchen into the breakfast room space and make the current kitchen the dining area?? Anything goes really - this is now an open space to play with!!

7 years agoAre you keeping the window in the Breakfast room or opening it up to the courtyard? If leaving as a window and the rooms are wide enough you could possibly take a row of Tall units down the left side of current kitchen, so thats the oven, larder and built in Fridge freezer, then continue down that wall into the Breakfast room with Large Pan Drawers, hob, sink, dishwasher, washing machine. Have low & narrow units opposite the tall units to create a window seat & great for storage. With fold up tables you could use the window seat for additional dining. A long dining table opposite the sink area in the current breakfast room with bench seats depending on width of the room. downside of this design is the distance to get things out of fridge and the need to ensure a work top is near the oven. Just trying to think out of the box I hate the same old look kitchens. you do need a good 3D image to imagine the look, Good luck. 7 years agoOK so you might think this a bit daft but had you considered installing a utility next to the wc and shifting the kitchen towards the conservatory?. The door from the hall to the kitchen could be moved in a bit. (From what I can gather from the various pics, the 7m doesn't include the conservatory). I've done a rough sketch which shows how it might work. There's a bit of guesstimating though so hopefully it will be of some benefit!

7 years agoHi Annayenon, I would suggest 1.8m x approx 2m for the utility; about 3.6m for the kitchen leaving you with about 1.4m + however deep your conservatory is (about 3m?) for your dining table and chairs. Apparently the ideal size for an 8-seater table is 3.7x4.6m, but I think you could get away with a little less.. especially if you have a bench along one wall. I've popped my guessed measurements on the sketch which might explain it better... Don't forget a stud wall will add approx 100mm to the dimensions.
