Total renovation of grade 2 listed cottages, conversion into 1 cottage.

Need lighting for cellar which has limited head room.

Hi Jonathan, thanks for your response. Funnily enough, very soon after posting the plea for help we came up with a solution (after months of deliberating). Whilst the library is approx 3ft higher than the breakfast room, we have empty cellar space below & so we are currently thinking that we will drop the library floor to the same level as the rest of the back of the house, remove the wall & chimney breast between the library & breakfast room, take away the back door outside empty space & join up the kitchen wall to the main house wall. This will create a large living/dining space with the kitchen remaining in the same space but with additional floor cupboards and the cooking area coming out to the living/dining room. The back garden will join the house via large bi-fold (or similar) doors. We are currently debating whether to keep both the original breakfast room & library doors into the hallway or whether to lose one..... & in which case which one! The cost of all of this work will be less than the original extension that we were considering & will enable us to remove the chimney breasts in the two floors above the breakfast room, thereby making those smallish rooms bigger. Hopefully I will get my light & airy space soon :)

Optimising the use of a dead patio area with a bespoke oak orangery

The design and build brief from our client in Surrey for this seasoned oak orangery was to optimise the use of a dead patio area and link two buildings; the main house and a barn conversion. Therefore extending the existing kitchen in one building through to the new orangery, incorporating a spiral staircase wine cellar within the orangery floor and provide new access to the lounge area within the other barn building. The orangery features a large oak roof lantern maximising natural light especially through to the kitchen area and as a result of using folding sliding doors on the sides allows the whole area to be open to their landscaped garden. The orangery has a microporous stain finish to reduce ultraviolet light damage and the roof incorporates the latest, soft blue, easy clean, solar control glass having a 0.9 u value and keeps out 83% of the unwanted heat in summer. lamps in the middle of the room, how to light and avoid trailing cable

A lot of American homes are timber frame, have wooden floors and a cellar/basement. When you go into the basement, typically all of the electrics are run under the floor so it is easy to place a floor socket. If you have wooden floors then running a cable and fitting a flush floor socket would be quite simple. As an alternative, I just found this on Google: http://foter.com/explore/cordless-table-lamps An interesting idea as I make lamps from recycled wood, I hadn't thought of cordless but with modern rechargeable batteries and LEDs it should be quite simple to make.
