Help with very windy balcony/terrace

Dear Houzzers!

I have a lovely South facing, top floor terrace - which is unfortunately very windy. At the moment I have a "cube" 1.2m square table dining set - (which I can rarely use due to the wind) a BBQ (which I use as much as I can) and some bamboos (inherited from the previous owner). I am looking to redecorate for Spring/summer as I feel it is quite charmless at the moment. I also would like to know if anyone has a suggestion on how to stop the wind. Any ideas would be very welcome!

I feel for you, we had a similar problem in Wales where we had to enjoy the view from inside! However, have now moved and all is well. I have seen a fabric screen which I am thinking of using for privacy which you might find suitable. It is on the Wayfair.co.uk site and is made by Grasekamp. I like the fact it is on a sideways sprung roller, (bit like a projection screen on its side ) so can be rolled away when not needed. Good luck

Although a fabric screen could help, it would certainly need to be strongly supported to not act like a sail and blow away.

Certain wind-resistant fairly stiff evergreen shrubs in heavy or restrained pots could work. Depending on your location and orientation, you might want to look online for small to medium-sized shrubs suitable for windy seaside gardens.

Hello again and thank you so so much for all your comments and suggestions. I read all of them and I visited our architect today. This is what we came up with. I think it is also what @nmshea recommended. I think this looks much better and is what we wanted. I just want to mention that we live in Cyprus where it's very hot most of the time so we need the big balconies and double doors. Also the small bedroom will be eventually a kids bedroom and not so much of a guest room but it's not that important now. So this is the plan with the last changes made. What do you think? Do you prefer L-shaped sofa or a 3-seater and a 2-seater? Thanks again to everyone who has commented :)

Hi - been there done that! Start again! OK I can see there is enough clearance below the door to allow a decent fall to be created if its not enough already. This can be done using pressure treated timber firings which are essentially lengths of timber cut and tapered to dimensions according to a plan such as my example below (I realise your balcony is much smaller but you should get the idea). My firrings plan and cutting list shows 3 drain points with the firrings mitred to created falls toward relevant drain. Your local timber supplier should be happy to cut these and pressure treat resulting tapered timbers which would be fixed at 300 centres max and would have 20mm min marine plywood screwed on to them at 150mm centres. OSB 3 roofing 'chipboard' which can come in tongue and groove form would also work, I just prefer ply. They need to be planned out so that the fall of the timber firrings sends any water toward the drainage channel (if there isn't one then create one) or to the edge of your balcony where the rainwater gutter will collect it. Then use RESITRIX - we used this supplier, but there are plenty out there.... http://www.rubber4roofs.co.uk/shop/epdm-rubber-roofing which is a much stro nger version of EDPM rubber and can withstand foot traffic as it is reinforced with fabric making it almost like a wet suit - its a fantastic quality product believe me!. You paint on a black primer on to the ply, then peel the backing off the RESITRIX and apply. Be warned - as experienced people (but not exactly specialist roofers) we managed to do this very effectively, but found that extreme care is needed before committing as once the RESITRIX makes contact its sticks forever!! this is especially difficult at internal corners. Only peel back the backing plastic off the RESITRIX rubber a little at a time as you need to hold it up off the deck to ensure it doesn't make contact in wrong place. two pairs of hands can help!!If you have planned the falls correctly so that the water is sent to the drain, you will now have that long awaited water tight balcony! Now Google 'tiles for decks and balconies' and you will find no end of options of special porcelain or ceramic tiles with plastic adjustable feet for each corner of tile which allow you to place the feet and tiles level on top of your RESITRIX flat roof with no risk of penetration pif the rubber. Water goes between the tiles as they are not grouted, just placed on the feet. Not sure if the tiles you have will work without cracking - you could test this by standing on one which is supported only at corners. by the way RESITRIX happens to be one of a range of flat roof solution I have used including Kemper liquid rubber system (which is reinforced by a fleece like fabric which is simply rolled out onto a bed of liquid rubber then soaked on top with more rubber) Messy but effective, a similar process to GRP. Have also used one piece EDPM rubber which a very competent DIY'er can fit. A very economical and speedy solution, but not good for foot traffic - although they are starting to introduce reinforced versions. We are actually going to use slate grey plastic/wood composite decking http://www.wpc-decking.co.uk To do this we will PLACE a new set of firrings on top of the completed rubber deck but also will stick strips of RESITRIX to underside of firings for protection. now we will have a deck that can be lifted for maintenance in future if required. These firrings are the opposite of the ones used to create the falls, which brings the deck back to level of course! In reality we will actually adjust to maintain a slight fall so that, and the gaps in the deck takes water away. A long answer - I hope that it helps! Best of luck! Hi original poster! I know it’s 7 years since you asked this but would love to know what you did. We are not in a similar position with a similar looking house at the back but even steeper. I know that a full extension and lowering the internal floors would be ideal but we can’t afford that and need a 5-7 year fix. Please let us know what you decided and why ☺️

So,what I understand on the big balcony to remove the trim and respect the shape of the balcony,then I dont understand how its that corner above the second balcony(that corner its very important for me because I dont know how to close it,to end it)Regarding the colours,the villa looked that way,the previous colours were k?You suggest me to get rid of the white?and replace it with what colour? .Its an excellent idea to put a roof on the second balcony,and the material used for the fence and balcony to be instaleed vertically?and what material?wood would be fine?and the colours greeny on the side,brown,and white like in the photo.Anyway its an excellent perspective,Im looking forward to be in touch with you,I do appreciate your help.regarding the terrace I want to build next to the house what do you recommend?Tks

Hi there, you can get windbreak netting (the kind of stuff they use in scaffold sites) which can help with the wind problem, so long as it's securely attached there shouldn't be a problem. For plants, the bamboo you've got is a really good option as it can cope with most conditions. Restios which are another ornamental grass seem to love windy conditions, i recommend ' Rhodocoma capensi'. Also, plain old Christmas trees (potted ones) are really sturdy and act as a windbreak as well. If you do put in more plants make sure the containers are strong and sturdy.

Good idea to think options - deflection or reduction.
Trying to deflect the wind is tricky, the roller idea sounds fine but I agree with the other comment - it's a sail and our experience is not positive. Plus you'll get eddies or capture the wind when in the wrong direction.
Why not complement your bamboos with screening from the same material. Or reeds. You can cut it easily (rolled up if you want to reduce height) or wire snips for length.
Very cheap and you can paint it to suit.
This will do well on the absorption and you can always double layer it on the prevailing wind face.
To break up wind flow further in height terms - I'd go for palm in a barrel. Leaves are designed to to give in the wind but there are enough to break up the flow.
Scaffold net will give you greater than 80% absorption so effectively it's a screen with disadvantages above. It will flap noisily unless you tie it in multiple places.
Your cube an be held down firmly with hessian sandbags, inside and attached with elastic cord.
