To go blue or not?
Now the builders have gone I'm left with a completely blank canvas in the living-dining room. I always envisaged this space as blue, even on the first viewing I thought, ah, this should be blue. But now I'm not so sure. I've bought just about every tester pot of blue under the sun, but none seem to quite do the trick. The rooms have two south facing windows, one north facing window and large west facing facing french doors, so in theory should be bright and sunny. But it's not. Unless its really sunny, which lets face is not very often, it's quite gloomy.
I love blue, but have only used it in bedrooms before. What can I do to make it work in this space? Is there any hope for my blue ambition?
There will be a neutral (oatmeal-ish colour) wool carpet going down shortly. The furniture going back in the room is mostly oak. The sofa and chair are brown linen, though these have seen better days and will probably be replaced soon. I'm in the market for new curtains / blinds, cushions, etc.

Comments (10)I think the cheaper finish actually goes beautifully with the worksurface, but it's a very icy colour and will look very cold, if you mind that. Comments (2)I am not a fan of American Style Fridges so of course my opinion is tainted...... How about having European style fridge and freezers integrated? This will give you more fridge space, avoid the usual unattractive gap needed between cabinets and the fridge to allow the doors to open and give a more expensive finish to your kitchen. As far as the range goes- I have a pale one in a kitchen with anthracite base units and I think that looks better compared to a friend who has a black range in a wood kitchen. Comments (8)Thank you both for replying. Oval room blue looks lovely, however my husband is convinced it looks slightly green and he hates green. I definitely like the idea of light bedding with darker walls but am worried that the room will look small and oppressive with dark walls which is why I'm finding it hard picking the right colour. I want the room to look warm and relaxing. Dulux denim drift looks like a bluey grey and according to Dulux it goes well with neutral colours and wood. 7 years agoWow what a lovely project! Your room looking very inviting and organic with the natural woods and oatmeal toned carpet. If you opt for one of those blues we would suggest using alot of white features to break it up and brighten the room, see the window frames in this picture and skirtings too! its important not to have to much expanse of blue on flat walls, if you do be sure to accessories the wall with art work and other wall accessories.

7 years agoIn my opinion, the shades of blue that you have been left with are more suited to bedrooms. The picture below shows a mid to dark blue on one wall, if you want to get an idea of what that might look like. I'm so glad that my boys don't really care what paint colour we have so that I could make all the decisions!!Perhaps to get everyone on side you could pick out a few photos from Houzz that are close to your ideal vision so that your family can see what the whole room might look like. It can be difficult to visualise the finished effect from a small paint sample.

I've just been looking through your ideabook and just as an alternative (assuming it's still log storage) I love your dining room idea which will mix with the style you loved of the Oliver Burns pic although perhaps a little less dark leather if mixing the two with a slightly lighter/warmer, earthier scheme overall mixed with lots of plants. It's hard to see the Oliver Burns pic but I think he's used Mauve for the cushions which you could also use for pattern in a rug. Perhaps a nice big leaner mirror, perhaps window style, behind the sofa will bounce more light. It would flow through from your hall nicely too. I do like your blue ideas though:)

7 years agoThis is the (almost) finished room. I'm really happy with how it's turned out and glad I stuck to the dance hall blue - albeit as feature walls rather than all over. The other walls are F&B Clunch, with F&B wimborne white on the ceilings. I'm going to paint the inside of the log store / display areas blue - was just trying this look out before committing.
Now, turning my attention to curtains and blinds. Can't decide whether to go neutral and add colour with cushions and art (head), or go for colour (heart). I'm quite keen on adding dusky pinks, but have never decorated with it before so am a bit nervous!!

If you opt for blinds our Roller Blinds or Pelmet Roller Blinds would be ideal for you as the fabrics can be easily swapped without remeasuring or even removing the system form the window.
