New Build - Garden Design Ideas

Hello, I'm looking for some ideas and inspiration for a garden following the construction of a new build home on the plot. My initial thoughts were to have 2/3 evergreen pleached trees to the north-west of the garden to screen the property from the neighbours who have a stairway window on that elevation which overlooks the garden. Due to the orientation of the garden, I thought it'd be best to have raised desk or patio in the north-east corner to maximise the evening sun. The areas closest to the house and the middle part of the garden I'm open to any ideas. Thanks in advance, N

Pleached trees sound like a great idea, as they do provide excellent screening in the sort of situation you are talking about.

Obviously you will need some hardstanding out side the back door and for access (by the look of the plan to the utility. It may be an idea to create symmetry in the space by providing a similar deck / terrace in the south west corner, during the summer it will get some sunshine and a good place possibly for breakfast.... It might therefore be interesting to design the garden with a mirrored symmetry running NE- SW.

Above all keep it simple, in terms of the design. The garden will be made by the skill of the planting plan. Look forward to seeing the results!

Pleached trees in part might look odd, as they're best placed to reinforce a formal layout such as a path or a full length of a boundary. I'd consider a focal tree as it only looks a small landing window. A Birch, Acer, Amelanchier, Prunus or all good small to medium garden trees that you could buy at a reasonable size to start with. The other thing, pleached trees are expensive and need correct staking/guying to keep them in place.

A generous patio outside the living room doors provides immediate seating outside the house, whilst a smaller patio area in the NE corner will optimise the evening sun. This then lends itself to an asymmetrical layout but perhaps with a central lawn which the an adjoining path takes you round, The lawn could be oval on a NW - SE axis with paved areas in the NE and SW corners with generous planting to the boundaries to provide a setting to the whole garden and hide the boundaries.

i think the most important thing is to work out first of all how you would like to use the garden space, whether its to relax in, socialize in, kids/grandkids to play in, to enjoy from the house and or different focal points within the garden, is there an area that gets say evening sun and that's the time you both get home and want to enjoy a meal/drink in the evening sun? do you need storage areas? outside cooking area? how much time do you have to spend upkeeping it? (and be honest! too many people aren't believe me lol), how much money you have to spend, both on landscaping and maintenance, once you really know what you want from it, have a search though houzz at the different styles of gardens and start getting an idea of what you like and come up with a board with clippets of different styles, doesn't matter if it takes time, best to get the basic's right before spending any money before planting, its worth getting the soil tested for its type, ph and nutrient level, this will also help work out what plants you will be able to grow sorry I haven't helped with styles or direct ideas, I feel its your own space and to get the best from it you need to understand more what you require from it and what you can give to get out of it most of all good luck and enjoy turning the lovely space into a garden that you can enjoy

I would say that 2 of the best trees for a small garden are Cratageus prunifolia and Prunus subhirtella subsp. autumnalis (the form 'Rosea' being a darker pink. Both these have good autumn colour. The first, a hawthorn species, also has lots of bright red fruits in the winter and white clusters of flowers in spring. The second, Autumn Flowering Cherry, often flowers for 5 to 6 months, from Autumn through to March/April. Obviously you are unlikely to want to put any trees right in the middle of the garden but it is worth avoiding putting them hard up against the edges of the space. If you start with a small specimen, ideally bare-root, it should be quite possible to establish one or two trees on that bank. Using Mycorrhiza powder, when planting, will increase the rate of establishment of any trees or shrubs you put in. Most Garden Centres should have it.

I would look at a standard laurel. Something like this will cost around £120 each for a decent size. You should plant these every 120cm-150cm. Don't forget that you can add height by building a raised border around the perimeter. You could also look at Photinia Red Robin. But get them professionally pruned each year as photinias will get very straggly if you just trim the outside branches as you need to take out some of the centre wood to promote thicker growth.
