Advice needed on lighting for new kitchen extension
Hi there,
A while back I posted a question
about advice on architects and kitchen extensions and I am pleased to say that I am now well on the way to starting the project. The dilemma I now have is around
lighting and what to do with it and where to put it. My other half hates recessed spots (our last house had hundreds) and we have a peninsula in the kitchen design. Should we have some feature lighting over the peninsula or would it affect the view of the floor to ceiling kitchen units behind? what should we put over the dining table area and TV area? have people done anything clever that doesn't involve putting 25 recessed spots in the ceiling? any help appreciated. Photos attached to give you an idea of the layout and design.

7 years agoHi we have just had the same dilemma and in the end we employed an architectural lighting designer. I see that you have 4 rooflights in your new extension, these are a great idea for natural light but I would consider s placing them with a wider centre so that you will have somewhere for a pendant over the dining table. Our extension is very similar to yours and we do still have recessed angles spots in the ceiling for working, they are zoned so that they can be switched independently. We then have hanging pendants over the island and dining table. In addition we have lights recessed in the floor and certain points to create low lights for when we are entertaining, we also have led lighting strip around the base of the units. Hope this gives you some inspiration sorry my pics aren't brilliant

Comments (1)Hi It looks as if the extension may of been added at a later date. This may be why the soil pipe runs through the roof. You may be able to redirect this. And yes building regulations state that if roof has more than 50% taken off you must reinstate insulation. Comments (18)Been thinking about this one overnight:- ( i have a sad life! all say ahh ) You do not have to have a window to call it a habitable room, however, I believe there is a building control requirement for the room to be vented through another, check that out. So, in short, yes the bedroom could be moved and not have 'windows' . I don't know the arrangement of the wall top left that goes in to the garden area, but bear with me. ............ would it be better to have a separate Galley kitchen? I would prefer so. Is there a possibility of a window far top left? A stud wall only takes up 4" so not a great deal of space, plus it would make the lounge / diner look a lot nicer without seeing the kitchen on view permanently & of course you get a longer kitchen run. ( I think the proposed one is too small ). Plus you gain a wall to the lounge area, always handy for furniture placement, as this is what is lost in an open plan arrangement. I also changed the bathrooms round as previously suggested, and had the entrance in the hallway for the second one. Please bear in mind as a said before:- Not to scale - don't have dimensions as had to guess, but on the face of it, likely do'able. I like running plans through estate agents...........ones that I know well and trust as I know they'll give me their honest opinion on what would infinitely give a better price on re-sale. Contained living and dining with separate kitchens, good sized bedrooms etc. So do ask one. Estate agents are handy, they will want you to get more for the property because, if they smell a sale, they get more commission! Comments (6)I would suggest handing the FF the other way - aesthetically looks better paired with the pantry that way - and allows you to open both to see what needs to be restocked or to decide what to cook etc. Also for aesthetics, have the drawers either side of cooker both three drawers and the odd one other side of pillar as a two....See More

6 years agoHi there kwg, I love it as it stands thank you. We ended up using Wren and are really please with the layout. We have a sink on the peninsula to one end and have made it extra deep to accommodate a separate set of floor units on the living area side that our daughters use for hidden toy storage. It also makes a great overhang for a breakfast bar and we now have stools there too. Feel free to dm me if you have any other questions and good luck
ps there is a unit missing to the left of the microwave and that wall now has metro tiles for splash back

Hi Giles. I think that your best option is to place some hanging luminaires that will accent the space and make it feel warmer. You should also use focal lamps as they can also help you make a distinction between the spaces. , you can make use of the height of the roof and ad another lighting element on top of the peninsula, in the height difference you can add some LED lights to highlight the volume.
