Raised flower beds

I'm looking to put in raised beds along the fence of my garden and wondered what the cheapest way to build these would be? The garden is quite big which is why I wanted it done as cheap as possible. I'm after a contemporary design so not looking for wood. I like the clad walls but for the size I'm after don't think I afford it along with everything else I need to do. Any other ideas for a modern look raised beds? Thanks

Hello Emma, I think the cheapest way to build raised beds in a modern garden is to mould them of concrete and polish or paint with a masonry paint after.

Thank you, yes this is the look I'm after, love it. I thought these were a rendered brick, like breeze blocks? Do many people do the moulded concrete? Is this cheaper than breeze block and render?

What a great picture, and a design that could easily be adjusted for your site, in terms of both hard landscaping and soft landscaping for a Cheshire site. The elements of slabs, wooden boards, rendered walls, low hidden water feature and lush low-maintenance planting can be achieved on a small budget. Water features surprisingly cost quite a bit, even a simple rill such as in the picture with small bubbling jets and lighting. To keep the cost down, you could look for concrete slabs, and use a softer wood and then stain it to the colour you want, rather than going for an expensive Iroko wooden board. Of course, once you start staining you will need a regular care schedule of cleaning it and re-staining it. Perhaps if the budget will allow, you could spend more on say composite decking boards and a stylish piece of furniture, and then use cheaper products elsewhere. A good Internet search will reveal some great products, but don't get carried away. Stick to your idea of how the garden should look and be strict with yourself. Failing that, appoint a garden designer. Regards Mark

Retaining wall / Garden terrace

Hi, I am new on here! But we recently removed our pond and old retaining wall with slope to build a higher retaining wall as part of our extension. Our new retaining wall runs along the width of the garden and we put in two levels of walls with flower beds in between- that gives more strength to the structure than a single wall with plants behind? We didn’t use a structural but a garden landscaper who worked with our builder. Hope this helps!

Sorry you said it was south facing already, silly me! Against the wall, behind the sedum, you could grow a Ceanothus which is evergreen and has gorgeous blue flowers in May, or maybe a Star Jasmine climber, but you will need to provide support for it (white very fragrant flowers in summer). Another lovely shrub is Hibiscus, not evergreen but has exotic pink/purple flowers in the summer. Under the window you could try Cistus which is a shorter shrub, evergreen, with pink or white flowers in early summer.. At the front of the border you could try Geranium Rozanne which has blue flowers all summer long. Crocosmia could be planted nearby. Ideas for raised garden beds

Happy New Year all 😊 I'd like to get some landscaping ideas for my garden beds. As seen in the photo, the bottom row of the garden bed is currently not being utilised. I am considering filling it with low maintenance plants/flowers and leave some room to grow herbs. Do you have any ideas & tips? I would love to add some colours to the garden, ideally mixing some low/ground covering plants with taller ones (it'll great if they can cover some of the concrete wall). I live in Sydney and the garden gets full, direct sun till evening so some drought tolerant plants will be a bonus :)

I don't know to be honest, it is better to ask your builder. But I assume if the wall is not too high it would be cheaper with just the mould and cement.

I like Marinas suggestion. It would be much more cost effective if you can do it yourself. I would say that you need to realise that until it goes off, the concrete will be much heavier than the same amount of water. So your shuttering forms need to bear a huge force, especially at the bottom.

Making a footing which holds some chunky timber uprights in place would be a good approach to making sure everything goes well. They could then be sawn off afterwards and the section on the footing sacrificed. Waste timber, like the good top section of old fence posts, would be good to keep costs down for your formers/shuttering.
