Ultimately, it’s your kitchen, and the most important thing is how you and your family are going to use the space. Design the space and features (must have items) around the activities that will take place in your kitchen, and most of all ensure you match your kitchen to your lifestyle. Step 4: Finer details As you become clear on the demands you will be placing on your new kitchen make a wish-list of your preferred products and materials. From a practical perspective consider what you will require from you appliances, worktops, storage solutions and sink and tap. You may already have a look in mind of the kitchen in terms of colour, style and finish, but it’s a great idea to gather ideas from magazines or websites. Enjoy creating a scrap-book with cuttings of furniture, flooring, taps, even paint finishes, crockery or vases- anything that inspires you. Even just images with right ‘feel’. Step 5: Budget With a kitchen the cost of key elements such as appliances, units and worktops can vary dramatically. For instance, appliances may account for a considerable percentage of the total cost of the kitchen, however if branded top-end ovens, hobs and extractors are specified this percentage can escalate dramatically to become the most expensive element of the project. Similarly the choice of worktops materials and door material may increase the budget substantially. There may be areas of the project where you may have to be prepared to consider a compromise to stay within your budget. Step 6: Layout As a rule of thumb this will be dictated by the existing dimensions of you room, or you may be lucky enough to be planning to extend. If you are extending you amy wish to consider an open-plan kitchen to seamlessly link through to the living area. Whatever the shape there are clever design options that will ensure you can make the most of the space available to you. Even in a tight space a clever designer can still work miracles.

Verena and MATH - I wish I had some nice pics for you, but I really is just a shell, still. Bare walls, exposed cabling, etc. BUT, I can share a few of my kitchen sketches if of interest... Pic 1 is the plan that went out the window this past weekend as we decided on stacked ovens next to the fridge. Pic 2 uses a magic corner to make the most of the corner space where the pantry would have been. In this scenario, upon reflection, I'd put the pull-out pins between the magic corner and the sink so that the first two units you see have the same door type (is that OCD?) The issue with this one is that I lose my 'dish pantry' from that corner, and I really wanted to be able to come in and make a cup of tea and a sandwich without having to go further than the sink. I also want DH to be able to set the table without having to come into the working aisle to get the dishes and cutlery. Perhaps I'm overthinking it, but... Pic 3 reinstates the dish drawers in that corner (although the actual base corner is not used). After doing this drawing I decided I'd have a small set of drawers for cling film, foil and dish towels between the dish drawers and the sink (again for continuity of the fronts), and put the bins in first position on the island (shown in the last pic). I'm a bit gutted to have lost the pantry, but I'm really pleased with the stacked ovens. I'm trying to convince myself that I can split pantry items between the corner upper cabinets (bread, jams, tea, coffee, snacks), and the island (tins, pasta, grains, sauces, spices, etc - the stuff for actual cooking). I agree with Hugh re supervision plus by the time the extension is built your son will be nearing an age where he understands a little more. You may also want him in there to cook with you soon. I'm sure the kitchen can be designed from a safety aspect too if that's the only thing holding you back. I think the advantage of using OnePlan is that Karen can look at the whole house spatially etc and you're not tied to a particular kitchen company (I'm not on commission!). Click on her profile for reviews etc. I second Hugh's comments re karndean too! I like the heringbone parquet! If you did want to hire an interior designer (designers tend to be qualified in planning too I think as opposed to an interior decorator although many of those could be qualified by experience) then you could find you save as much as you spend. Some of them will offer you their trade discount which if doing the whole house could add up to an awful lot. They may also make you save from any mistakes and I've made a few of those! I'd go on houzz and search for pros and look at their reviews and previous work. I think you need to meet people yourself though as it's important to have a good working relationship and make sure they understand you
