We solved this problem with a Phillips lamp. It has a very low profile, energy saving, etc. It's a great lamp, good light for a dining area, perfect for our low ceilings and doesn't impede the view through to the garden. Just did a quick browse to find the exact name (below) and found that Phillips have a number of low profile pendants to choose from. My general instinct would be to work with low level and indirect lighting, ie. table lamps and floor lamps, ideally all on a dimmer. Large statement lights work great in large rooms but since this is on the smaller side I would accentuate the cosiness. A large pendant can still look great but may just not be practical in terms of sight lines. Do you have photos of the room?
