Solid or Engineered Oak Front Door - Advice please!!!???

We are looking to install a new front door. There is so much on the market, and I am struggling to decide. Please cn you advise on the difference, pros and cons of having a solid oak front door vs. engineered front door?

An oak door of any type needs to go under a cover. An engineered one would come under part L with thermal values. A solid one would be 56mm and very heavy and would not delaminate, but possibly an engineered one might as it is only normally a 4mm veneer.

Based on that a solid one is recommended but the difference in cost is considerable.

Dictated to me by hubby a bespoke joiner for 45 years.

I think you are missing an opportunity here; this is the perfect excuse to buy lots and lots of books. I have have run out of shelf space and have to choose what to pass on before I can buy any more...tough choices. :-)

I agree with darker - I think the reason the light door PP posted looks good is the style. A light colour with a modern design wouldn't have the same effect. This a Cromwellian house in Herefordshire fitted with one of our stainless steel Letterplates and the door colour looks great with the black and white. The porch timber is paler than the rest of the house timbers (you can just see the black window frame to the right) and is a modern addition but as it's still a shade of grey it all works well together. Thank you for replying Sobi. It was from seeing your post that I checked the Endurance website out and contacted the local fitter but they said their Endurance doors start at £2,200 - £2,300 which is quite a difference from the quote you received! I will look at your suggestion. I have had a quote and someone measure for a Rockdoor and quotes for Solidor but am just so confused as to which is the best to opt for. I have read negative reviews that recently Rockdoors adhesive is failing and the local fitter for the Endurance door advised that they used to fit Solidor but had issues with damp or something getting into the top of the doors, but that was two plus years ago so might have improved since then, maybe.

Hi Chelsea, There are quite a few differences to think about, in general engineered is usually what we advice for most of our clients. This type of flooring will be more resistant to moisture and heat. Also, engineered flooring can be "floated" on underlay, whereas solid wood has to be glued or pinned to the subfloor. We tend to use solid wood when it's unfinished and do the sanding and lacquer or oil on site. Although solid wood can be cheaper to buy the fitting process can be slightly more expensive. Depends on what sort of house you have as well. I have just had a new wooden front door fitted along with wooden sash windows into a Victorian house as it suits the house better to have proper wood. However, a friend has just had an engineered door put into her 1970's house which looks fine.

Standard wood such as oak is not a great material for doors as they can warp and twist over time. Our engineered timber doors have a Kerto Q core, Sapele Mahogany lipping and Tricoya facings- this combination prevents these issues and means that there will be no draughts due to shrinkage. The overall result of an engineered timber door is a stronger and more durable door which holds paint for longer and doesnt require maintenance.

We do our doors in a 44mm or a 54mm slab with an optional thermal core, but an engineered door is definitely superior in terms of durability.
