I think a 700mm screen would be fine, any bigger and you can't get in the shower! My mum has a 1700 shower with tray, she's got a fixed screen of 850 plus a small hinged one. The water is well contained within the fixed screen. Id just check there's enough room to comfortably get in with the fixed screen although it seems fine, I'd go for an overhead shower plus a handheld, if you don't have an handheld it is a nightmare for cleaning. Just to add to Carolina's idea, you could also look at an aqualisa digital shower although there may be others as you can have a remote control set within x feet of the shower, you program it to a set temperature, press the button and when the light goes off the water is the correct temperature. I installed one in my old house, no need for arms getting wet or testing the temperature!

A glass wall that doesn't move is going to be a nightmare. It gives no flexibility for cleaning - you'll have to get into the bath to clean that shelf, the taps and the bath as well as the inside of the glass. Perhaps this glass door swings and it's just a clever photo? As for the taps, they really do need to be on a different wall so you can turn them on before getting under the shower - having them on a side wall is better than having them on the back wall. I reckon you'd bump into them all the time, turning them on or off accidentally, if they were on the back wall. When I installed my shower room, I decided against glass and built a wall instead, tiled on the inside and painted on the outside. If you get the lighting right, it doesn't matter that it's a wall that doesn't let light in; you don't need daylight to wash, you just need light! And the tiles are much more forgiving in terms of cleaning than glass is. I realise this might not work for you if you are having an over the bath shower though, if you have room for a shower room and a bathroom you might not need one over the bath?

Thanks everyone :) Jonathan's open plan concept is certainly an interesting one...... obviously a more "radical" transformation and my concern would be the expense - lots more walls going up and coming down! (I assume that's a structural pillar near the kitchen island?) We have a budget of around £100-130k, which would hopefully include some general renovations to the existing house (new family bathroom, new bannisters for the stairs, replacement windows to the front and new hallway flooring). We're in West Sussex so might possible have a postcode premium to factor in :/ I do like the idea of having a kitchen/diner/sitting area across the back of the house though, as that would really make the most of views to the garden and countryside beyond. And a proper study at the front would be lovely as it's nice to have a nose out the front while working! I'm not so keen on lugging washing from a front utility room to the back garden, but I do like the side access so it could still function as a muddy boot room. I can see the smaller sitting room not really being used at present, if we had a sitting area in the main room, but it would come into it's own when the children are older and either they or us retreat there to escape each other :) While the children are small, I can definitely see the dining table going where the sofas are in the main room and the former dining room becoming a casual sitting area/play space with toy storage. They just aren't older enough to want to play upstairs in their rooms yet, although my 5 year old will do this if he has a friend over. We could definitely re-configure the room as we went along though. My husband would lose his workshop/man cave in that design, so I'm not sure how he'd feel about that..... but it's certainly something to consider. I think we've shied away from the full open plan concept somewhat, as it feels like quite a leap from the house we are used to! And I always find it odd when a house looks traditional on the outside and then opens up into a cavernous, modern space when you open the front door...... But perhaps I need to sit with that concept for a while, plan it out a bit and take a look at some interior design inspiration? I think it if I could, I'd live in a very traditional, rustic county cottage with cosy spaces, but that it's the reality of this house, so......

Thank you people! For your replies. I never thought about speaking to the colleges. Good idea! I already plan to add height with a square chunky black pergola, I’ve walked down there today and thought why on earth am I hanging on to my greenhouse - I grow seedlings cucumbers and tomatoes, but it’s otherwise just a dumping ground. It would be the perfect spot for a sofa or swingseat with fire pit which would leave the lower patio area free for a table and pizza oven (one day in my dreams!) It isn’t a small space, but I would like quite a lot from it. Budget is non existent - we have done everything ourselves by hand so far...Which we have enjoyed luckily! Hubby needs a spot outside his shed to tinker with our bikes. I have my veggie patch already but obviously would like more.. love the greenhouse but a smaller one would suffice. Loved my swingseat and want another..kids have a huge paddling pool that kills the lawn every year! Sun rises in the front of the house and sets at the back, so the garden is southwest facing. The new patio area gets the sun from morning through till about 6pm. And then lightly again at 7.30pm (big trees in the way!) The patio by the house gets the sun from mid morning till 7pm in the summer (it goes down behind those huge trees). Photo is 7.30pm taken from by the house. You can see the wonderful trees by the river. It is wonderful down there (albeit pongy!) as we don’t hear the main road as much - just the birds and the ducks on the river at the bottom of our garden
