I think an open plan layout always looks great and can really work to make a smaller space feel bigger. But if I had a large space to begin with, I'd probably stick with separate!
Open plan is very well suits with both the modern and small spaces. It also depends on the culture for instance some people in some countries like big and advanced kitchens that seperate area is necessary.
