1960s dividing doors - what to do ?

Hi, we have a 1960s house, complete with glazed dividing doors which we never use, but equally they are not in the way. The pelmet above is ugly so if we kept the doors it would have to be replaced but what with ? We are ready to decorate the room, should we ; Remove them all together or Update them in some way - maybe a grey paint & some new pelmet.(but how & what) suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance x

These are all the rage now but termed as pocket doors and hidden within a wall.

My suggestion would be to replace the glass with either frosted or clear glass depending on your preference as the glass dates the doors.

In terms of addressing the pelmet issue and bringing the doors up to date to become pocket doors I would take the pelmet down and get a carpenter to create a false stud wall in front of the doors.

Thank you, I'll definitely get painting, I'm googling about painting upvc as we speak, seems a bit confusing and not sure whether I'd be better off getting a professional- if they even exist! Maybe I'll just head to homebase tomorrow for some primer and paint and give some DIY a go! We have a bay tree in a more contemporary pot where the planter was now, but I was also thinking of getting some big timber planters for below the two front windows as a way of adding both timber and structured greenery to the Tarmac and brick combo of the front! I wish I could paint the Tarmac, but it's all uneven too so would probably show that up, I'd love to just tear it all up and replace with gravel but I might wish the Tarmac back once I have a pram or high heels!

thanks for the comments everyone, the bathroom is directly above the kitchen so no water utilties at the front of the house. I prefer the kitchen at the back of the house so i can just pop in and out of the garden with recycling, collecting herbs, keeping an eye on small children! A snug at the front is my preferred option as at night time curtains are drawn and it doesn't matter that it is overlooking a car in the drive etc as its dark. I have thought about knocking chimney wall down and bring back the hall wall to the stairs to this sketch configuration (please excuse the rough sketch!) I would like the extension glazed on 2 walls it wouldn't be big ( 2.5m out by 2m wide but I would have enough space to house all my appliances etc and if I went for a mirror splashback I could see what the kids are up to behind me! Also I like the idea of the sink/dishwasher being in the extension as used pans etc are not on show after meals. I also desperately need storage so floor to ceiling opp the kitchen would be ideal. Maybe the snug looks too snug, but i wanted to incorporate a play zone for the children. I have fallen in love with this extension, however our budget will not allow the amount of the glazing on show, but i think we could do something clever with the aluminium framed glazing etc.

Hi @whizzywig - this is the current layout: On the ground floor the lounge, small bedroom and main bedroom all look out onto the courtyard so the glass is in place but could do with an update eventually. We acutally viewed some Span estate houses with a view to buying - Field End, Cedar Chase, Weymede, The Plantation. But in the end we found this place on a small estate in SE London that fitted the bill.

Hi Tracey. I grew up in an identical chalet style house in the 70s so this caught my attention. I recently watched one of the George Clarke programmes on Channel 4 where they adapted a house that was identical to yours. It was an amazing result. Might be worth having a look on the web or trying to find the episode on All 4 to find it and maybe find some inspiration. Good luck

I'd keep them too, but replace the glass with plain glass and paint all the woodwork a lovely dark grey ( F&B down pipe) with the walls in a lighter grey ( ammonite) or similar. Think they'd look great then!

I suggest that you keep the doors. They just need to be updated with a fresh coat of paint to match the walls and plain glass inserted. The pelmet may just need to be replaced also.

Updating track and hardware (a modern handle) would make a difference to how the doors look too.

I too would keep the doors, but replace the glass. What's in them probably isn't up to today's safety standards, and clear glass would look a lot nicer. With regards the pelmet i'd paint that the same colour as the doors. You can't really see it close enough to see what's wrong with it or how it's made. There are ways of changing how the doors are hung, you could always get a carpenter round to make suggestions.

Another way of painting, would be to have them exactly the same as the wall colour, with the clear glass, they are then less of a feature as they will blend. Personally i'd go for this option.

I like them too. I think they go quite nicely with your mid-century-ish style furniture. Paint them, change the glass but definitely keep them.

Hi, I believe that the pocket door system is the way forward for you, if you would like to keep the rooms partially separated. We have installed a number of these systems over the last year and I think that they're great. If you do go for them make sure that you get the soft close action. I wouldn't recommend reusing the original track as the weight of the new door may accelerate the tracks demise and you won't be able to get to it for the new stud wall that hides all the workings. Good luck with your project.

If you live in a 60s house, i would keep the doors, they're in keeping with your property. You could change the glass if you like and give them a fresh coat of paint.
