Kitchen lighting

Looking for bright dimmable lighting for my kitchen. I have the most awful LEDs at them moment, and I find them too dim for reading, and really bad for displaying true colours.

I cook a lot and light is very important to me.

I have been to john Cullen but their lights are very expensive. Is there another London lighting company that can advise me on the best bulbs to get bright clean light, like a halogen, but the next best thing?? I would really prefer halogen everywhere but everyone says good quality LED are good enough. I disagree! We did have a nightmare with replacing transformers and bulbs in our last house tho.

I have also realised that I probably need to get my eyes checked, before anyone suggests that!

Ok, so LEDs can be bought in the same temperature as halogens, namely warm white at 3000k, that's what you're looking for.
I always use the Halers H2 pro, and go for the 60 degree spread not the 45. 10 year warranty, and at around £27 a time they're not chronically expensive.
They just plug straight into 240v mains as they have their own transformers, and life expectancy is 70,000 hours from memory.
Cheap LEDs simply don't have the lifespan or reliability.

The colour temperature of the LEDs suit the finishes of the first kitchen, but the second kitchen , with wooden effects, needs a much warmer LED. A fine line when working in kitchens as the cooler the LED, the better the preparation light. Tough one!

We hate spotlights too, and under cabinet, under /over plinth lights.....We have 2 pendant lights over the island, 2 wall lights along the kitchen run, a pendant above dining table. This is plenty of light for us.

Smart bulbs are definitely worth looking at. I use Hive (which I initially got to control my boiler but expanded into other things). You’ll need a hub, but you can control lighting schemes really well, including when you’re not home. There are a lot of choices out there and, so far, I’ve used ES27, bayonet and GU10s. I have basic dimmable, tuneable (which go from warm white to bright cool white, and colour change). To further make use of the system, I’ve used movement and door sensors to turn lights on and off automatically and plugs to operate other devices. All these things enhance security and make it more comfortable for my dogs - nervous chihuahuas - in the winter if I’m not home before dark. I’ve also had LED fittings which claim to last thousands of hours but have had to replace them in less than 2 years. Fine if they’re the cheaper end of the scale, but I wouldn’t spend any more than £25 based on my experience.
