Hi, I would steer away from white. I am in similar situation like you and am an interior designer. There are lots of options but the one I'm more inclining to (in your case) is light grey like Farrow & Ball Pavilion Gray for example. It's pale but has a hint of grey tone in it which would create a really nice contrast between the warmth of the cherry wood. Also if you are using the top a lot, I'm using mine all the time, have you perhaps considered having a glass top? My top got really badly damaged by a oven cleaner gel when I put the tray on it and the whole surface just peeled off. In my case I want to protect it with glass. Just a thought... What are the maximum dimensions of the footstool? Also what's the height of the sofa to the seat cushion? Personally I'd go for a Chesterfield on legs to keep the feeling of space in a plain fabric with a tray on top as AJ suggested

I think maybe Granite in the standard colours is actually quite a dated product. I know that people still use it. Maybe i'm more against it as i've lived with ours for nearly 20 years. The granite was very expensive and although we've changed units, we haven't changed the work top. I know my wife hates it, as it's pure black and hard to keep shiny. We've got a beautiful pale silestone ( polar cap ) in our new house, if we ever get there. Have to sell this one first, and this side of Brexit just isn't happening!! Good luck with your project.

Thanks for everyone's comments. This is really helpful and so nice to get such constructive and thoughtful comments. This is our first major project and builders got us to first fix and my husband is doing the rest of the work himself (kitchen, bathroom installation, tiling). This forum is exactly what it's all about - design advice and solution solving from those that have been there and done it. You're right Victoria - in an ideal world we could have had a higher windowsill (we're not keen on the counter top running into the window sill) but so hard to get every measurement spot on when you're planning a kitchen when the extension is just a shell. We're getting there though and really pleased so far. Just interior design and 2 bathrooms to go!
