How can I bring my Georgian dining room chairs into the 21st century?

Would really appreciate your suggestions on how to update a set of Georgian dining room chairs. They are a family heirloom loved by my husband but not so popular with me...any ideas on how to give them a 21st century makeover?

Hi Daniel What a lovely light kitchen! I see you have decided to change the worktop which is a good idea if you don't like the existing (temporary fixes always seem to stay forever in my house, much better to go for a permanent solution if it's within budget!) if you like colours I think the suggested mustard yellow would be good, or teal works really well with white and wood. Also, you mentioned tiled wallpaper, how about some real tiles? I have a new kitchen too, it has very pale grey gloss units and a white quartz worktop and white walls (at the moment, eventually I'm planning to paint them dark grey). It's lovely but a little plain like yours. I found some lovely tiles which are white and grey which sounds very dull. It they introduce pattern which really ties it all together. I think you could choose some tiles with a nice pattern (they don't have to be brightly coloured if that's not your thing). You'd only need 2 rows, not all the way up to the upper units, introducing some pattern could really bring it to life. And perhaps some coloured chairs when you get round to thinking about furniture? Also, how about hanging a picture on the wall below the wall unit above the washing machine? I love a picture in a kitchen! Hope this helps, enjoy decorating your new home!

So funny! I'm planning to paint the bannister at the new house (TNH) black and am veering towards painting the treads and risers black too... I've been searching for images of black staircases on Houzz and putting them in my entrance hall ideabook. They are few and far between. In your case, I think, with your white walls, maybe the stairs white and the bannister black? (Assuming the white walls continue up the stair walls enabling the b/w contrast.) You've already put black firmly into the equation, adding some more may give more reason for the black rad cab. In my case, there is a very off-centre radiator that could so very easily have been directly opposite the front door in TNH which is rather annoying as it stuffs up the focal point. We are leaving here with every radiator covered with a cabinet - and going to TNH that has loads of radiators ...but no cabinets! Yes, the work ahead is daunting - especially since the area of Ireland we're going to is very basic and not full of DIY resources, etc. I keep thinking I'll paint TNH white - to make things simpler(!) But try as I may colour keeps wandering through my mind! Lovely to be in touch again!

Hi colour happy and Minnie101, I really like both of your ideas. Leaning I think more towards the style of the Flynn chair. Though I think both would work....decisions,decisions!! As we are wanting to replace all of the chairs.....could we use the same style as the Flynn and just have 2 different colours for the host? Or would you use 2 different styles? Thank you! I am new to all of this....it's all very exciting but makes me nervous at the same time :-)

wow, thank you so much for all your great ideas!!! Unfortunately I cannot move the table centrally as it would block the way between the kitchen and the stairs/ doorways... I like the ideas of moving the pendant lights right above the table, installing a large mirror on the empty wall..I could actually move the sideboard there and add nice baskets for shoes next to the door . Also add a big painting above the table. Gonna give a few try to see what works! and agree the blind doesnt look good, it was just previously there. Thanks :)

What age/style is the house? Do you also have the dining table? Perhaps you can also give an idea of styles you like as there's only one pic in your ideabook

I think going with a Moon style tweed fabric would bring these up to date. the georgian and tweed mix would give it a very interesting feel. have a look at these websites for inspiration: http://www.anta.co.uk/ and https://www.moons.co.uk/apparel/sartorial-fabric-shop/ - hope this helps!

I'm wondering if a real style contrast would work? Am particularly fond of the African wax prints e.g. https://www.vlisco.com/en/catalog/new-collection/

But not sure if the wood style is too much of the period and it would be too different. I'm presuming a paint effect on the chairs would irreparably damage them?

I'm at a loss to find any online examples...

How about upholstering in a luxurious grey fabric and re-staining/painting the wood? Or make a real statement by choosing bold colours? Our uber-styling with designs like that from http://www.cygnuspapilio.com/gallery/4576391473
