Velux windows in large extension

Currently planning 5m x 10m extension on bungalow. Part of the open plan kitchen/living/dining will be open to the roof approx 5m x 7m in a 5mx11m space. Initial plan was to have 4 large velux windows - but starting to worry about the cons.... cold in winter, hot in summer, cleaning, and mostly the noise from wind and rain.

Any advice?

It very much depends on what heating, insulation and glazing is being incorporated in the whole room. Also which way the room faces. We have a 10.5 m x 5.5 m living kitchen in an extension with about 1/4 of it vaulted. There are 2 large roof lights and extensive glazing. We are north facing, have underfloor heating and insulated 12 inch walls. It is plenty warm enough. We find the roof lights a great help with cooling in the summer.

For a new 'Eco' house in Germany, we've specified openable Velux rooflights with internal blinds and external awnings ('Marquisette' auf Deutsch), all solar-powered. These options offer a wide range of heat retention, solar gain exclusion, ventilation. Well-fitting rooflights shouldn't be noisy and I'd ask Velux if the awnings cut down noise from rain.

Consider the way you treat the internal area around the velux to direct the light. See attached photo of an example, the 'surround' doesn't necessarily need to be boxy, they can be angled to let more light in. I'm taking the surround down on the vertical so it merges into wall. I like the idea of them looking like an integral part of the building. I've got 3 78x140cm going into my 5mx4.5m kitchen area and 2 going into the 4.5x4.5 sitting area. If your veluxes are close together you might need different flashings.

So...Work is progressing irritatingly slowly but we are finally at the point where the wraparound lower floor extension roof is going to be built in the next few weeks so need to make decisions on these veluxes and I’m struggling with the sizes so would appreciate some more thoughts... The pent roof to the ground floor extension is around 1.4m in length internally - so is it feasible to have 98cm height windows with around 20cm of ceiling at the top and bottom? Or will this be a bit squished? I’m concerned the light is going to come through and just hit the external wall of the floor above (steel beam projects around 20cm below ceiling height which is 2.4m) Assuming 98cm height is ok...I was thinking the 78x98 sizes or a combination of 55x98 and 78x98 , and I think they will look better lined up with the windows on the 1st floor rather than lined up with the sliding doors?! I’ve indicated where the dining table will be on the plan (as you walk through sliding doors it’s dining table, island, then tall units against back wall) and we wanted to put a pendant light above this which is problematic if there is a velux in the middle of the dining table but this is my preferred layout so far:

The amount of light they bring into the existing part of the house will also depend on how much of the wall above the opening remains - ie how high your ceilings are in the existing house and if you have a joist/beam running below this height or concealed within it.
