Building a rill

I want to include a simple, straight rill in our garden - 4-5 metres, metal or metal effect (looking like corten steel), just deep enough for a model boat, no clear ideas about feed in or how to end. Is this something our gardener/builder can do, or should I find a specialist water feature company? I live in Manchester, UK

If you have a clear idea of the design and how you want it to work then a local builder should be able to do this for you. But I would suggest that a pond specialist would be a better way to go as they will be able to work out the detail for you to a better degree, for instance things like balancing tanks that will keep the water topped up and also filters and uv units to keep the water clear.... both essential elements to make an attractive water feature.

What a great picture, and a design that could easily be adjusted for your site, in terms of both hard landscaping and soft landscaping for a Cheshire site. The elements of slabs, wooden boards, rendered walls, low hidden water feature and lush low-maintenance planting can be achieved on a small budget. Water features surprisingly cost quite a bit, even a simple rill such as in the picture with small bubbling jets and lighting. To keep the cost down, you could look for concrete slabs, and use a softer wood and then stain it to the colour you want, rather than going for an expensive Iroko wooden board. Of course, once you start staining you will need a regular care schedule of cleaning it and re-staining it. Perhaps if the budget will allow, you could spend more on say composite decking boards and a stylish piece of furniture, and then use cheaper products elsewhere. A good Internet search will reveal some great products, but don't get carried away. Stick to your idea of how the garden should look and be strict with yourself. Failing that, appoint a garden designer. Regards Mark

Hi i am happy you like my little garden retreat, you are right it is nice to add your own touch to your garden and not to be to regimental, it gives you a great satisfaction when you sit back in your garden lounger and think i created that, it also works out a lot cheaper, just adding bits at a time, and if a plant is not working for you, you can dig it out and move it knowing that you have not paid someone a fortune to put them in, i am not saying professional help is not needed as i had to get someone in to do my flag stones but it was someone i knew so that worked out cheaper and my brother did the decking at both side of my garden, he is not a professional he just likes DIY don't tell him but i think he is pretty good at it lol.. it cost me the price of the wood and 2 cans of beer,( i was given a couple or quotes of £450 for a 10ft x 7ft deck and £399 for a 7ft x 6ft deck,) i did paint it big mistake on my part as with being south facing it just peeled off with the heat but is nearly all off now so i will just power wash it once a year and give it an oil treatment, when you get your garden done send us a pic i for one would love to see your project,

You get used to the space very quickly and just as quickly fill it up with furniture. The feeling of space is great and as a new build I doubt heating will be an issue with insulation standards. I would suggest creating a feeling of space, lots of storage and light are crucial. 1.5 acre garden is very large, especially with a baby. I used to have just under half an acre and spent forever getting no where with weeding and cutting grass. I literally planted hundreds of trees as a wind belt and for decoration and you will need a ride on mower. Does give you space for a play area, patio, veg and fruit garden etc.
