Living room curtain advice please

Help! I am going round in circles trying to choose curtains for my living room. I have 3 windows, two doors and a pair of patio doors in one room. There are neutral Roman blinds on the fire wall which I am not planning on changing. So I am looking for two pairs of full length curtains. I cant decide on the material, plain or patterned and what colour way. I am hoping to change the sofas in the future but want to start with the curtains. The room faces east, the patio doors face west and the house is in the shadow of a hill so can get quite dark, especially in the winter.
I love the geometric fabrics but I think they will go out of fashion quickly.

I am terrified of making a mistake as I know what an investment curtains can be so any advice will be gratefully received

I moved house recently to a house that had 3 patio doors in the one room. Being on maternity leave and buying a new house, our budget was tight.

I picked up these chevron print curtains from Asda of all places at £37 per pair!

They would tie in with your blinds and keep the room feeling light and airy. Also it wouldn't break the bank if you fancied a change once you decide on a new sofa?!

Hi. It looks a nice room. Are the blinds new as I'd be tempted to have curtains to match if the fabric still exists? You can add pattern with cushions and a throw and maybe lampshades, try pooky as they have a few patterned ones or Oka. They're also cheaper to update when you want a change! Perhaps if the seating arrangement was a little tighter you could also consider a patterned rug ( otherwise it could be a little expensive!) Hard to tell but it looks as if you can go a bit wider on the pole on the window to allow a little more light

No the blinds are not new but I haven't really thought about changing them. I am liking the idea of patterns on the cushions etc maybe that's the safest plan

The room is a great size. So we have a bit of background, how old is the house (i.e. is the existing decor suited to the age) and which direction does the window face (if it is South facing, you will get loads of natural light so could go darker with your colour scheme if you wanted. If it faces North, you might prefer lighter colours, or go darker/bolder, but make sure you have plenty of lighting accessories. And how much work are you prepared to do - could ceiling rose removal/replacement and removal of textured paint ceiling finish be on your agenda?

i think it's done an autocorrect on the paint colour, which one is it?,Is that wall painted a different colour to the rest? It's also hard to work out the sofa colour! I'm not sure if this fabric would work? I think I'd go for a green tufted footstool and add a tray And accessories. Not sure if this is the perfect one for the orange wood but just to give an idea. I think you need to repeat the orange, maybe for a copper lamp (can the sofa move away from the end wall a little?) and/or framed pictures. If you didn't like the footstool you could go for a painted table with wood top

Thanks people. Think I am going for the blue and white as I don't want to detract from the black & white art work I have and I do think the window should be classed as another wall. Doubt photos would help as room still only half completed. Been a nightmare with family illness and Covid around. Usually I'm on a roll and very good at this. Need to trust my instincts. Thanks for the comments though

IKEA also do some great eyelet curtains and they have some geometric patterns in the greys/neutrals and very reasonably priced.

I'd have gone for shutters personally as it will make the room feel cosy. But in terms of curtains, Orla Kiely have some olive-coloured ones (otherwise brown) on multistem pattern which should inject some colour to the room - if you like olive colour that is! It should also stay in fashion for some years. They are available from JL at least.

I'd try to get Roman blinds for the bay to match the existing and only have curtains on the French doors. As Minnie says, a longer pole would be great. Inject colour with accessories. Lovely to have so many windows.

I too would try and match Roman blind for bay. As the room is quite plain make a bit of a statement with curtains for the patio doors and have matching cushion.

I agree about a wider pole. plus either go for a plain neutral heavy fabric that will match with everything for as long as poss, or if you only want something to dress the window and offer some occassional shade, a voile type curtain. That is what we did in our house. Offers shade from bright sun but keeps the room light.

I would go with a Roman blind in the bay, although I have curtains in my bay and I think they look great. Shutters would also look good in the bay, but they can be expensive on such a large window. As the room is quite plain, a pattern would be good. If you like geometric then it would be a good look, especially if you choose a softer colour. Curtains needn't cost a fortune if you buy ready made, and I think that would suit the patio windows. All you have to do is move the pole up or down to match the length. Most full length ready made curtains at 90 inch drop. Good luck with your choice.

Dunelm do very reasonably priced eyelet curtains and tracks. I've recently had cream chenille and have gone across the whole wall which I think gives a more luxurious look.

You need to make a decision. Do you want the fabric to bring colour and pattern to your room or do you want to keep the whole room neutral?

If you want pattern, the next decision is what style- check or plaid, stripe, floral or geometric?

Then what colour(s). The room, as you point out, is not overly bright, but do you use this room much during the day or is it an evening room? You could opt for deep, rich colour that warms the room at night like burgundy, deep turquoise or terracotta. Adding patterned cushions with similar colours will splash colour around the room. Also, I'd replace the Roman blinds with matching fabric to the curtains, otherwise that will will lack colour. You could make a single curtain for each of those smaller windows in your main fabric and pull it to the side furthest from the fireplace, tied back.

As to style, since you don't appear to be overlooked, floor length curtains on the front window and patio doors can be on a 50mm pole extending at least 150mm plus finials each of the windows. To stack them further back extend the pole more, but take care not to have wall showing just before the window recess. Tieing them back would allow more light to come in.

Just blinds at the window, nothing at the patio doors but paint the wall there a fresh colour - and pick that up again in cushions, lamp shades, etc.
