Living room update

Hi guys-

Looking at massively updating the lounge/dinning area.

It's a ground floor flat, with very little natural light into the room.

Currently has flurescent oyster lights, which give no life to the room at all, and is too bright. I end up just using the lamps.

I am thinking about pendant lighting. But just not sure too be honest.

Thoughts?

Hello!

Looks like such a cool space.

We just love lots of light just love having the option to flood a room with light if needed and dim / swop as needed.

If it were my room I would get an electrician in and install down lighters across the ceiling on a dimmer switch and perhaps with two or three zones / areas / types.

Pendant light (perhaps a multi level cluster) over the dining area will add a nice feature and also create an intimate area when hosting and dining.

A large mirror, if not a few will help to reflect any natural light coming in and help the room feel bigger.

Lamps are always a good idea for mid level lighting and for changing the room mood too.

Hi. I agree with angieav, but I think you need to tell us how you use the space so we can help with the best layout. Do you use the dining table every day or do you eat in the kitchen? Does the electronic piano get used a lot? Is the woodburner for heat, looks, you've always wanted one, or just because you think you need a focal point for the room? Is there a restriction on where it would be (do you have a second storey above some of that room)? That said, I would make the sloping wall the focal point with built in shelves, including a slot for the TV, and have it in a contrasting colour with books and nice decorative items. Because it is angled, you can then see the TV from much of the room without it being a big feature. You could have a couch square on to the entrance to the room, maybe an L with the short end against the wall where the TV currently is, a chair or two between the two windows and where the other couch is at the moment, but without sticking out so much (it looks like that couch blocks the traffic to the kitchen, but it might just be the angle of the photos). A dining table can go where you currently have yours, but I would flip it around so that it is long in that space and that is a dedicated dining area. Or have a round one that extends so for everyday it isn't encroaching on the space and traffic to the kitchen. The piano can go over near the door to the outside. A woodburner could be installed where you currently have your TV (as long as the flue has somewhere to go!). With this layout, the seating will be facing the woodburner and the TV. If you don't use the dining table much, you could put it over on the carpeted area, as someone else suggested, and dedicate the part that currently has tiles to the lounge (and then we can rethink the layout of that area). As for the flooring, I would go with what you have in the kitchen so that it flows. I hope that helps to get you started.

I think tan leather would look good with the mango furniture. I'm not sure that mid century would complement your furniture, Chesterfields are fashionable and fine for modern homes so you could go down that route. Although I think something like this would look great: http://www.made.com/canape-3-seater-sofa-saddle-tan-premium-leather. Decor wise with tan leather cooler colours work best - blues, greens and greys. I love olive green with it - you could bring in as an accent wall if light is an issue and copper accessories would look great with the olive - Next has lots of lovely copper stuff in at the moment.

Hi. I agree with the comment above re window treatment and would hang the blinds in the recess, maybe introducing a pattern? Ignore the style of this room as I'm not too sure what you like as you've got a few in your ideabook but white always works for a west facing room. You could have the chimney breast in green with a white mantle and also go green for a sofa (assume the wing chair is staying?). You can also add small accents of blue or aubergine. Alternatively you could go for a pale muted olive with some warmth to it on all walls, similar to the tile colour in your very first pic in your ideabook and then paint the mantle grey and go for grey sofas. You could also add aubergine to this and gold accents for a mirror etc would look nice. If I was to paint anything oth than the surround I'd paint the coffee table as I don't find this tones in as well as the other woods.

Hi, I don't see why you can't try it. Here's an option where I used 4 small storage ottomans in a living room design. It works because the size and scale fit will within this space. If you already have a sofa in place I would use some masking tape to tape out the area on the floor that the ottomans would take up and see what you think. Hope that helps and good luck! Carrie

Uplighter's from the floor in addition to recessed ceiling lights will give you even more options on the lighting adding a wash of brightness combined with other lights and creating a really intimate and cosy mood alone.
