Renovate sitting room

I've just purchased a house and am looking to make it my own. Below is a photo of the current lounge. I'm going to get wide oak floors in a natural colour and deep brown leather couch with grey upholstered danish chairs, but I need advice on the fitted cabinets/shelves.

Should I keep them?
Is it possible to paint them?
What should I be aware of if I do decide to paint them?
I was thinking either white or grey, but which shade of grey would be best?

Any comments or advice would be great!

I'd keep them. They are beautiful and suit the room. You can paint them, I'm pretty sure of that but don't ask me about the technicalities. It's a bit of a shame, because it looks like the vein in the wood continues beautifully, but it won't work with natural oak.
You could paint them white and paint the insides of the cubes grey or blue or whichever colour you'd like for a different touch.

At least, I don't think it will work with an oak floor as you described.

Keep one sofa, get a couple of chairs you like and then an additional slipper chair. Choose a theme to tie them together- probably similar colours. I would love to see the chairs in a pattern, a couple of matching cushions for the sofa and a plain small chair in a different colour chosen from the pattern.

Dear all, Thank you for your very helpful comments! I greatly appreciate it. My partner likes curtains (he always found curtains pretty and they would help with insulation as we have single glazed windows) although I also love the idea of blinds and see how curtains can crowd the place and get a bit lost behind the sofa. I think the idea of oatmeal curtains or blinds with a blue trim would be really lovely and I will definitely look into this. Do you mean a trim running the vertical length of the fabric? We had thin sheer white shades already that you can see now in the pictures. Carolina, it's great advice to make sure to get wider poles so the curtains flank the windows - I think this will make a big difference to open up the room. If we get curtains we would also probably replace the wooden poles with thin chrome poles. Bathroom Eleven, thank you also very much for recommending blue cushions to tie it all together and suggesting we switch the table direction. I followed your advice on both (I had gotten this cushion last week and didn't put it out yet) and I think it looks great! I will look at the links you sent. Thank you all very much again. Beks

It looks like the little kitchen area has now gone so I would create a booth style seating area in that space. The piano I would then put at an angle in the other nook facing into the room as a feature corner. The rest of the seating would then be in the main central area. I think ultimately this depends on the budget you now have to finish the room, whether lighting can be changed to incorporate some features and task lighting/pendants. Have you considered having a designer look at the space? I work remotely and include lighting, layout and accessorising in my PDF remote designs. As you already have the wall colour and flooring sorted this you would be surprised how affordable the price is :) best of luck. It's looking great so far.

The built-in furniture is gorgeous, but I if you're looking to have timber floors I can see why you'd be considering painting it. Getting the balance right between natural finishes and planes of colour can be tricky. Below is a link to a similar project we worked on in Edinburgh.

Hi there I would keep them as it's a large room and they look well made. Would you consider bleaching them or getting them stained in a colour close to the new floor colour. Alternatively I would possibly paint them the same colour that you decide to do the walls. I think the key is that they blend into the room and don't stand out and take centre stage!
