Good morning to Dorset from Scotland! My husband had a birthday last week and is now saying we're 'pushing 60'. We're active and fit, lol, but sensible too-the day will come sooner rather than later when one or both of us is not able to claim to be spry. Because the little cottage is in such a sad cosmetic state it was listed at a rather amazing price and we locked ourselves into it too early thinking it was a perfect spot for us to grow old. Whoops, thanks to several posts here about doing a reno or new build with a mind to age-in-place we are having to admit that is not the house for us. Luckily the town is the 'gateway to the glens' and if we wanted to use it as a holiday let we could easily. It's also becoming a commuter town-the hardier type people from Dundee and Aberdeen are buying in to take advantage of the great mountain lifestyle whilst being able to easily commute to their 'day job'. We were not looking for an investment property-not especially keen on the idea but more and more we're thinking that's what we've got. We measured the borrowed wheel chair, and also took the measurements of the typical mobility devices available now (the ones that are adverted as being in-outdoors), and frankly held up against the kitchen and bath measurements, there is no way we can make the bathroom work. Up thread (I think it was Deborah Butler of Brickwood Builders) a wet-room was mentioned as being best to accommodate a roll-in shower but hard to do as a reno project. Looking at the floor-plan, home report, and our own measurements confirmed that on this wee cottage-there is no way to do that and no way a wheelchair or mobility device is going to be rolled in that cupboard size bathroom. The kitchen could be managed if we drop the pantry wall idea, but the bathroom we planned to make a shower room is not manageable at all, and there is no room to extend that space. We would have figured all this out but much further down Reno Road, lol, so this thread has been a huge help to us just on that! Because we're now doing a much simpler reno (dropping the wider doorways and sliders, the ramp, and a few other a-i-p doings), the cost to renovate that lovely wee home is much lower too. The only things we won't be able to do ourselves is the shower conversion and the rewiring. A huge savings that we're going to need to find the right place for us! We know now that we need to look for a home with room to enlarge bathroom and kitchen areas, and with a less tricky entry to incorporate a ramp. For starters:) We have to be out of our current home by 1st August when the new owners will be arriving from Australia. We've borrowed the use of a caravan from friends to live in whilst doing the cottage reno (now that's small space living!) and that's going to be a help but I sure wish I'd joined Houzz sooner! I would have started this thread BEFORE locking into a property too small for our needs. Too, rather than use it as a holiday let or sell it on, we may move into the cottage once the reno is complete but we do know now there is no way we'll be able to age-gracefully-in-place in it. Sigh. Oh well, our builder is happy-he wasn't keen on trying to fit those sliding doors:) Take-Away For the Day? Be sure the property has room to expand vital living spaces before making an offer that is sure to be accepted:(

I work full time from home although I do travel to visit clients from time to time as required. The room I use was meant to be a dining room - though it is too small to be a proper dining room. It is only 9 feet by 17 feet and has 2 doors (kitchen and living room access) taking up valuable wall space. Luckily in my industry I don't need too much in the way of filing cabinets, so just 2 do the job. I have 2 desks in there plus a number of other basic office style cabinets I bought flat pack years ago. The room also has to house my tools (a lot) and I tend to keep my bicycles in there too, which I shouldn't as it makes it overcrowded. There is a store for the bicycles but it isn't convenient to use. If I have visitors then I either put the bicycles away in advance or we use the living room, which is more common. My wife works in an office and our son is grown up and not living here, so no clashes there. For most of my work I simply need a notebook on wifi and a mobile phone but the office has a couple of pcs, a multipurpose all in one colour laser printer and a shredder. The second desk is used as a work bench when working on stuff that needs testing and/or repairing. I deal in high tech small equipment. No stock is held, which is good for cash flow and for keeping security risks down. I love working from home due to convenience. I deal with companies all around the world so working from home means I can leave off and when I need to connect in real time to people the other side of the world I just walk back through into the office again and everything is there. To me that is better than having an office and then either having to go back there for a 10pm video call or have it from home and find the details I need are in the office. What I dislike is the lack of company. It can be lonely working from home. My wife works in a large company and they have all sorts of facilities for the staff. Gym, squash courts, room for health classes (yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Qong etc.), cafeteria and so on. They also have all sorts of clubs and other team activities. I miss that side of office life, but then not many get to work in such large office communities. The setup works for me but I don't think working at home would suit everyone. You have to know yourself quite well before making the change.

No We Do Not Need a Land Line : We have just stopped our homeline phone. When the last bill came in the calls out were only a fifth of the charges for the quarter. rental charges per month then tax, plus caller display made it £100 for 3 months charges. Calls were £22 for 3 months, really annoying. Everyone has a mobile and between most of us it was free calls and text. My mobile costs me £5 a month and my husbands' is free on business line. So bye bye land line, Still have to pay for the internet line but a dam sight cheaper. Not sure what your USA charges are compared to us in the UK, but we seem to be paying a lot for the service we have from BT who are the main supplier of landlines.

Would you consider having your (elderly) parents living with you?

I know this is an old post, but I thought I’d add that saying that Southern Europeans have their elderly live with them has not been my experience. My Italian cousin has her elderly mum live with her and it is driving her round the bend. Her mum has always been a difficult and demanding woman and even more so now. She is not doing it out of love, but duty. Another cousin has arranged for 24 hr care in her mother’s home as she has dementia and is bed bound. She confessed that it’s costing an absolute fortune but she has a restaurant to run and does not feel she can care for her mum full time. My mother was a very demanding and controlling woman and I was her carer as a child whenever she was unwell. When she started to develop dementia in her 80s I did consider having her live with me, but she had poor mobility and could not manage the stairs to access the only loo in my pretty tiny house. Also I don’t think I could have coped emotionally. Plus she didn’t want to! After several falls and leaving the grill on all night, my siblings and I decided a Care home would be best for her. We are talking about a person with dementia, very poor mobility and double incontinence. We found her a lovely care home a few minutes away and within weeks she had settled in well and even made a best friend. Seeing them holding hands was so sweet! The staff were lovely and I felt very welcome there. My sister loved it there so much she started to work there. Mum flourished in the home as she had company, good food and good care and our relationship improved until she passed away 2 years later.
