How did you acheive the recess lighting effect?

Is the LED or a strip light laid in the recess? it's very uniform and warm.

We're choosing them for our open plan kitchen/dining/living room. We need the durability of tile for the living and dining area, but stone look tiles feel wrong for a sitting area (in chilly UK). So we're hoping wood look tiles, with UFH, will give the best of both. Just a shame there is no way to avoid grout!

I recently stumbled across this effect while trying to get a cheap way of doing crackle glaze. Basically using PVA glue! Nothing fancy, just the stuff kids use in schools. So to get the effect like the one in the photos I would paint the wall a dark grey colour first then wait till dry. Then slap on the PVA glue, don’t be afraid to apply quite thickly. To get the bumpy texture use a stiff brush with nylon bristles such as a scrubbing brush or yard brush then stipple it (dab, dab, dab) onto the PVA while it’s still wet. I’d perhaps do this in small sections. Wait till this is dry (I get impatient and use a hairdryer). Then paint the second colour, in this case white or light grey possibly watered down a bit for a more washy effect, wait till dry. Then get the sander out and gently go over the whole surface, shouldn’t take much to take the paint off the surface of the bumps revealing the darker grey underneath. Then gently wipe down the dust with damp cloth and seal with a water based varnish. Job done! Incidentally, to get the crackle glaze you apply the second colour while the PVA is still wet then using a hairdryer the top layer of paint seperates to form the cracking effect. Magic! I’ve had mixed success with this depending on the paint. As suggested, test first on sample boards before committing to the walls and do let us know which method you go for. I would love to see final results.

Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who helped with ideas, and especially Jen for giving me a bit of inspiration and a light bulb moment! You are so right, holding your nerves whilst it’s going up is the hardest!! . I did opt for a splash back only and extended it so it goes a little under the cupboards. I’ve posted the finished pic below and hopefully going to accessorise with copper and wood to add warmth! A big hug and thanks to all x

The floor person does have a point I guess, in old houses the walls are never straight due to movement and in the new extension the walls might not be straight due to the person doing the dot and dab not making the walls straight despite the actual brick walls being straight! Look forward to seeing the end result, it’s a lovely huge space!
