How do you make a rented space feel like home?
Comments (38)We rent unfurnished, so always have our own furniture around us. I don't go in TOO much for the soft furnishings (rugs, cushions, curtains, throws), as they are cluttersome and really interefere with a low-maintenance life. Moreover, sadly, my posters, paintings and photographs have had to stay in storage for about five years, due to increasing fussiness by landlords/ -ladies about holes in the walls. HOWEVER, it is crucial to have ENOUGH of your own things around you, so that the web of YOUR things covers over a space which is, essentially, not yours. Minimalism has definite limits. Our last place had revolting dull mustard yellow walls, which definitely needed covering! Bookcases (with books!), a folding screen/ room divider, tension rods to create hanging rails, and one big rug (for the sitting room) come with us everywhere, like the interior of some sort of nomad's yurt! Seasonal and fresh decorations are another way to decorate a temporary home, and they leave only biodegradable waste, rather than broken MDF or shattered plastic! Leaf-skeletons on a string and rosehip-studded twigs (snap off the thorns!) for autumn (Fall). Holly, ivy and dried wildflowers for winter. Fresh wildflowers for spring and summer. Herbs in the kitchen....See MoreKitchen help - what can we do to make it look better?
Comments (65)Depending on how far you budget goes, I would look at adding traditional cornice and pelmet and replacing the plinth with a similar oyster colour. End panels for wall units could also be replaced / added. Some chessboard style tilling in 3 colours would also bring out the walls. It's hard to tell but is the oak surround also on the wall units? I haven't checked your location but this is something we can help with...See MoreProblem with metro tile with grey grout in kitchen
Comments (29)Thanks again for all your comments. Particularly helpful to be alerted to socket issue. I took these pics before the builder replaced the sockets with some nice chrome ones. (see new pics) However, he's still got them in the wrong place. Will raise that today. He hasn't actually finished the hood area in these pictures - as I stopped him. But also the chimney extractor doesn't seem to be functioning so it needs to come down anyway. This solves this problem and we can tile behind it - although I'm still worried that he's not going to be able to redo the job well enough. I've added some more pics with better light. Still finishing the floor and just have to adjust and tweak a few things but (apart from tiling) nearly there! The kitchen is Howdens Burford Grey, Pure White Quartz from Master Quartz (not been impressed with this as marking so easily with pans, belt buckles, any kind of grime - but probably shouldn't have chosen white! - anyone else had problems with their quartz?), Paint mainly F&B Wimborne White and Slipper Satin woodwork, engineered oak floor from Howdens....See MoreBudget garden makeover
Comments (47)Hello All, hope you're having a lovely Saturday - just saw Wales win their first Euro 16 match; very happy, now waiting for England. Quick update: cut the grass on a high setting following advice and did some weeding. Decided to jet wash the patio but found that my garden hose had holes in it. Had to dash, in the rain, to Poundstretcher to get a new one. I've never used a jet wash power and had a little taster. See below. Tomorrow, I hope to wash the patio properly but it's hard work. Tommy Turtle's looking a lot better and you can the slabs that I've done so far. Think I need to sweep first as the moss was flying everywhere! A little comparison, of what can be. Hopefully, I will post the results tomorrow. How is everyone getting on with their projects? Keep posting!...See MoreS L
