Light or dark wooden flooring?

The colour of the floor can really influence the atmosphere in a room.

What kind of flooring do you have in your home?

Here are some examples of light wood, mid brown wood and dark wood flooring. Which one do you like best? Or would you say it depends on the room?

I voted for the dark wood flooring but I also love the mid brown. In the end, it also depends a bit on the light you get in the room. I grew up in an old timbered house with small windows and therefore not a lot of light. Meaning, I would use mid brown wood for this house, while in my current, very modern and light flooded apartment, I prefer the dark brown wood flooring :)

Original floorboards we had done in my old flat. Dark enough without being too dark. Still able to see the markings in the wood

If you're wanting a traditional look then I'd go for a dark table. You could look at getting an antique table and adding modern upholstered chairs. If you don't want somethng traditonal then I wouldn't limit yourself to a wood, just spend time looking at tables until you find something you love and then plan the decor around that

I'd go for the mid tone to darker on the floor if you want to keep the existing furniture as the light ones will just go wishy washy against the pine. Also, you could go dark and paint the furniture in neutral tones to brighten up and look airier in general. Looking at the two areas, it seems a shame that after installing the log burner, that your sofa area isn't based there. How about moving the sideboard and dining table / chairs to the other end of the room. If you change the radiator at the sofa end for one with a really good BTU, then you should not need another at the other end, as you also have the log burner. This will then let you remove the radiator opposite the log burner and have your sofa against that wall opposite the fire. Add a corner unit to the alcove by the window and have the T.V there. This will also enable you to look out on the garden in the summer instead of distancing you from it at the other end.

Hi Emily. In terms of the floor it depends on a couple of things. Dark floors are hard to keep looking clean so would consider upkeep. If the room isn't large a dark floor may also make it look smaller if you have light walls/skirting boards (the less contrast there is the bigger the room will feel). If the room doesn't get much light then a dark floor could make it feel dark although if it has a glossy/shiny finish it will bounce the light. For the kitchen units try and work with the light. What way does the room face and how much light does it get? Light worktops are much more on trend. Again if the room is dark I'd avoid a dark Matt finish worktop although something glossy will reflect the light. Depending on the room you could find lighter units may make it feel more spacious. I'm not sure if that helps but more details are probably needed!

Loft is from a similar spot to All White and is likely to read quite similar. Shirting is just a tiny touch darker. Slaked Lime is darker again and looks very pretty in abundant lighting but sometimes it may feel a little greyed in a more dimly lit space. Stock is too dark and too colourful to be classed as a white or off-white. In may appear a warm near neutral in some settings and you may see a degree of greenness in others. Julie’s Dream is from the Yellow-Red Hue Family. ItIt’s both too dark and colourful to be considered a white or off-white. You are likely to read it with a peachy pinkness in relatively balanced lighting.
