How did you drill the correct angle in the stairway rails.?

Do you need a speciall tool to maintain the proper angel for both rails?

Yes - we actually lay the stairwell on the stairs to get the correct angle. Then drill them plumb. Good luck!

Hi again Ramona! Thank you so much for your interest - you have to let me know if you're ever in Wales and let me buy you a drink! We haven't done anything to the room in the last week; a couple of friends came by and said they like it (and then moved promptly to the cinema room which is much more exciting). What we manage to do is actually decide on a design of the shelving/ cabinets going in the alcove; that in itself is a great achievement, as I always tend to like at least 2 totally different designs and then take forever to choose one. Anyway, below are two photos of the style we would like to have. I know you suggested no floating shelves; however I'm not ready to go all the way traditional - I've not grown up that much! I like the clean look in those photos and we would probably go with the black and white scheme. Also, I've decided to use the 'bulls eye' painting on top of the mantel, which would throw out the purple theme and bring a red-orange one! But that is why I prefer the background (walls, sofas) to be neutral - I can then play with different colour schemes without too much trouble, just new rugs and cushions and paintings and you have a completely new look! And that's why I think classic (not traditional, but classic) works best, you can always accessories with whatever's the current trend and then change easily when it becomes dated. I guess living in the UK made me adhere to their way of thinking (although I made an exception with the kitchen!) The other 'close contender' was this other photo - they also have the shutters we would be getting next week. Apart from the high gloss, that style looks more formal to me because the shelves are 'anchored' in the cabinet, not the walls. We haven't decide if we're going to paint the ceiling or not - I think you were right and it would create a bit of drama with the pendant - I guess we would decide after everything else is in place. Renovation! - plug sockets, light switches and more...

I feel like I'm making loads of decision but still not really getting anywhere. There is so much to think about! Spotted some lovely toggle light switches so I've already bought them. I know where the light switches are going but its a case of figuring out the best places to put the plug sockets because we have so many in my mums house but we still run out! We've opted for a few USB sockets too so at least if we are charging phones and laptops, we are freeing space for other things too. In terms of kitchen layout, the suggestion of the seating in the bay window is great but because that would mean the kitchen would have to go at the other end, we've decided against this. It would work, and would probably be the best option once the horrible extension is knocked down but at the moment, the extension blocks all the sun light on that side so the kitchen would be very dim and dark for a while. The extension is something we are saving for and is more likely to be done in 4-5 years time so I'm not sure it makes sense to be in a dark corner for that length of time. We've had the house a month tomorrow and so far it has been ripping the house apart. January is the month we put everything back! Super excited. Plumber, heating engineer and builders are all put to the task in January. New floor in the kitchen, wall removed and built up again to accommodate the new window so that we can have units underneath, first fix plumbing, first fix heating and boiler installation. All other windows to be installed. Hoping that guttering and chimneys can be looked at too! We have a chimney breast on almost every wall which I'm sure was great for heating years ago but as they are no longer used, they cause so many damp issues! I bought paint tester pots today - I have no idea why, we are nowhere near ready for that but it just felt nice to buy something pretty and cosmetic rather than look at insulation and damp proofing. P.S; any suggestions on obscure glass for the bathroom and hallway? I've been given a huge list of options but unsure as to what to choose. Thinking just Contora or Arctic?

@Carolina thanks. Do you know how that works when you use flooring on steps? Do you build them as standard and then clad them over? I like the angled step idea, sadly our walls are badly out of square so your design kind of feeds you towards the right where as our room skews left, if you see the angle of the tiles. @Ellie there was a lot to design around. We needed a tall unit for the fridge and wanted one for the boiler housing and ovens. On the wall on the right in the picture there was only space for one tall one before you hit the steel. On the wall opposite the units on the left the height is only 1.88m high, putting any high units that side would have blocked the line of the velux openings. We could have left a gap before starting the bank of units but it would have just looked weird. Doorway is 70cm, same as most the doorways in our Victorian house. The first unit is just a standard unit for storage with shelves, the 2nd unit is the fridge but there's enough space for 2 good size steps with the door fully open.

Well the half wall is down :) I have a carpenter on the way to look at boxing in the pillar with the fuse boxes and cutting the step either diagonally across or circular. I'm thinking about replacing the carpet with a runner and assume I could do that with either shape? I'm either going for F&B Stiffkey Blue (2 in from the left, second up from the bottom), F&B Hague Blue (2 in from the right, second up from the bottom) or Valspar Play me a melody (first column, second from the top). Stiffkey and the Valspar are looking a bit too blue and Hague Blue may be too dark so going to paint bigger areas and see how they come out.
