Need help with my garden

We moved in in July and I have been waiting ad watching to see what was planted, what works and what for me does not. I knew the ground was clay and was expecting some problems, but the standing water is frightening me. How do I find out where it's coming from OK uphill and maybe I need some drainage but how do I plan it from source ie boundary of my garden or where it finally pools. Any help or advice welcome.

oh it is all ahead of me. You did the right thing to watch and wait which is hard to do. Firstly see what is doing well in your garden and your neighbours. How high is the water table maybe given the time of year it is higher than usual? Also go to the local garden centre a hive of advise on how any problem can be addressed, perhaps by channelling the water to elsewhere so it does not pool.

It may just be soil compaction, clay soil is very prone to that. Use a garden fork where it pools fork over the area: if heavy and squelchy then it is just your soul needed amended. Dog down about 3ft and add few bags of compost and bark and fork that in mixing it with the clay. Obviously if bigger area then you need to amend more.

If the water is coming from a different source then something like a French drain will be needed, simple to do yourself or to hire someone to do.

Looks like a wonderful character garden that could really benefit from a more dynamic planting scheme to soften the evergreen backbone - lots of gardens of this vintage are dominated by large evergreen shrubs and trees which tend to make spaces feel claustrophobic and smaller than they are. The lawn should be maintained and enhanced with shapely borders packed with dynamic perennial plantings, edged in brick or steel to maintain the flow long into the future. I think I would want to dissect the existing stonework walls and steps with some more open simple terrace/patio areas that put you in the garden and take advantage of aspect whilst a timber pergola/structure would add interest and the opportunity for climbers. A really wonderful canvas that should be enhanced and developed rather than changed, maintaining the feel and character of the original garden.

There are specific things you can do with a long, narrow garden. The main aim is to counteract that feeling of standing in a long low corridor. So, create some height with pergolas, arches, trees, etc. Also, you need to move the eye away from the boundaries by introducing shapes, like curves and 45 degree angles that move the eye around the garden and visually change its shape. Another trick is to divide the garden into rooms by introducing divisions - hedges, trellis panel walls, stone walls - to break the garden up and stop the eye settling on the far boundary. This also helps to make the garden more interesting.

All those listed have been vetted and must have Professional Indemnity Insurance to be an official Member of the Society of Garden Designers (MSGD). Many of them will be on Houzz as well as the SGD is affiliated with Houzz. Hopefully they also have reviews!

If you want your garden to be dominated by the new cabin then go for pale colours which will stand out. I would want it to look further away and would stain it black (or very dark grey) with grey deck around it which sets off the numerous greens in the garden really well. I would also Put a layer of planting in front of it so it creates a secondary area of garden. A simple block of tall grasses planted en masse for example. Gardens are the opposite of houses, adding rooms makes them feel bigger!

If the drainage is really bad and it sounds like it may be if you are getting pools of water on the surface, the best thing to do will be to get a drainage expert in. As Sven said a system of simple french drains may be a good solution. But you may also need to excavate a soak away for the water to flow into. Generally french drains are laid in a herring bone pattern to drain, with the main drain leading to a soak away. A drainage expert should be able to give you the advise you need.
