Where should we place spots/recessed lights in our kitchen?

Articles have suggested over the edge of the worktop & use directional spots to angle across the counter, but where should they be placed?
Can anyone add marks on this plan to help me know where & how many we should have?

Steering away from the lighting issue and back to the kitchen design, is that a washing machine positioned in the corner? If so how will you access it?

Yes it is, it's facing into the other side of the kitchen which is a dining area :-)

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I suppose I should have attached an image. Here's my drawing, there has been a few adjustments but it is basically the same. The blank spot is been set aside as a family area. I appreciate the need for good light in the kitchen and I'd like to go for recessed lighting but my fear would be that there would be to many of these lights and it might look like a shop! If I were to opt for recessed lighting how many would I roughly need? Would it be best just to keep the recessed lighting in one half of the room - kitchen or family side? The large circle is a table top where we can eat and there will be a suspended light hanging over it. After reading perry525 remarks it occurred to me that I'm extremely left handed and I suppose I'd have to take that into account, Your opinions welcomed. Cara

As the others have said, laying spotlights all over a ceiling just looks brash. They are best around the edges of the room, where the light bounces off walls and serves to give a nice glow, rather than an industrial glare. And I would absolutely advise keeping the central fitting on a separate circuit for a statement pendant - or at the least advise leaving the wiring for that there and hidden in the ceiling, for the potential for one in the future. Spots are massively overused - I have seen a load of period houses here in London made soulless by removing ceiling fittings and ambient lighting for a carpet of spotlights. spots are one aspect of a good lighting design, but should not light a room on their own - too harsh, too directional. If you read over a breakfast bar (sorry, no time to look properly) then you may want to be able to switch the light above that on and off separately to save lighting the whole place. Ensure that recessed lights are spaced according to the ceiling you have after you've put wall cupboards in place (tall ones flush to the ceiling also saves cleaning and you can use a slim stepladder to reach stores etc in the upper shelves) and ensure that lights are central above work surfaces so you aren't working in your own shadow. My electrician refused to believe this would be the case and we had to install a second row of lights to correct his error. I hope this helps. (You'll clock that my lights were not put in well!)

I created a mock-up in TinkerCAD to try to simulate the lights in a 6 spots configuration, with each LED having 40 degrees angle from 280 cm high ceiling. I am now worried about the ceiling being dark and having shadows in between, It looks like I need bigger spotlights probably 16cm in diameter? Probably my calculations were wrong? perhaps I need 80 lumens per sq ft. Dimmable LEDs. Yes, I will consider wall lighting especially near the mirrors
