how did you build the pebbled walkway?

I am getting ready to build a border like this around my pool.

The Scottish pebbles are laid over a well compacted Mot type 1 base over a weed suppressant membrane. The sawn sandstone are set on a mortar base. Hope this is useful

Hi Stephanie, One thing you should be aware of: with a puppy in the house you will struggle to keep the lawn alive. As you pull one patch of the burned grass out to sow new seeds, he/she will calmly move elsewhere. Hence, you've got two options: (1) create a "peeing spot" filled with round pebbles and try to teach them to do their business there. (2) Should you fail (as we did:), take inspiration from the Stanford garden and cover the area with a combination of stone slabs and pebbles with narrow strips of grass in between. You've got the lush vegetation all around the garden fence - sufficient greenery will remain to keep your eyeballs happy. ps: washing the pee as soon as your puppy has done it helps, but...to a very limited degree. The tiny ninja will sneak behind your back and do it...you will only realise it has happened again when the grass starts turning yellow. good luck Nat

Glad you persevered and had it fixed. You paid a lot of money to specifically have a decorative path. It being out of line on LHS with the front door would have been a permanent niggle that prevented you from enjoying it. Now you have a beautiful symmetrical path leading up to your front door. Congratulations!

Frogs also eat slugs and snails and are a general benefit to any garden if you can get them. But I do share your dislike of gravel, Caroline. Rocks and large stones I can use. Gravel is messy and tends to end up in places it should not be. Try to find a couple of trustworthy labourers who are not work-shy and hire a skip too. A couple of rakes and shovels plus a wheelbarrow if your labourers don't have their own. The lot should be shifted in a maximum of two days. One day if you've managed to get most of the area into those three camera shots. A skip large enough to take that lot will cost you around £200 depending where in the country you are. Labour costs for this type of work do vary quite widely. If you keep the pond and the patio you have two excellent focal points to plan the rest of the garden around. Think about your lifestyle and how you would like to use the space. Do you enjoy cooking? Then get the herbs growing as close as you can to the kitchen door. Do you enjoy gardening? Then plan your garden to suit the kind of gardening you enjoy - shrubberies, flower beds, borders, fruit, vegetables, will you need a greenhouse? Bear in mind which parts of the garden are in total sun, total shadow and what times of day shadow falls on which parts of the garden. Entertaining? Then plan for your desired flow of people and the focal points you wish your guests to congregate by. Situate them accordingly. Take your time. Rewrite it and rewrite again until you are happy with it. Or commissin us to do it for you. ;-)

Hi Cat. I hope this helps - rather than reproduce it here, we've written a series of blogs, hints and tips around this subject, and one of the links is below - it sounds like you are already well down the line, so you'll just refer to the relevant bits. Suffice to say that if you have the time, you can do this yourself. I've always found it best (both as a home owner and as a professional) to engage directly with a number of local contractors and to meet them on site to make sure they really understand the requirement before they price the work (things like access, skip locations and so on they will need to know); I would not trust this to an on-line process. There is no substitute for personal contact where you not only have the opportunity to explain any issues directly, you will also get a feel for the contractor with which you can work best. Part of this selection process is in listening to each contractor's thoughts which are often useful.
