Lights and stairs!

Hi,
We have just bought and are renovating a
house. It is open plan and there will be a dining area between the fireplace and stairs (stairs run at the side of the house rather than through the middle).
We are making a dining table approx 6ft long and need to decide how many lights to get? I am looking at these which are only 14cm wide.
I like glass pendant shape but we might get a glass staircase too, is that overkill?

I love that ceiling shade. I would say 3 /4 is the magic number. I think anything will kill the desired effect of the lighting. Space them out evenly but don't align the 1st & last ones too close with the border of the table. They should be more inwards. In my opinion, too much glass "may" be" too much! I hope that makes sense? Good luck with your design journey.

How exciting! Sounds like a great space.

I agree with above on 3/4. It will of course matter how much other lighting you have in the room as rooms/activities have standard light 'requirements'. But visually 3/4 works well.

With the glass I think it depends on the style of the table and staircase and ultimately the over all look you are trying to achieve.

I can't see it being over kill if it's just the lights and stairs.. in fact the lights will tie the stairs in to the remainder of room. It will just need to be balanced to not feel 'too much' :)

Depends where you're getting the handrail from and in what style. Some wall handrails have stock (inexpensive) ramps which would turn the handrail into the wall at the top and bottom you could then channel the handrail to take the wiring to the wall to be concealed into the plaster. See below picture (ignore the fact its on spindles its the same principal)

Hi Peony, Very interesting choice of the Vardo! Most stairwells are dark and narrow and the best way to enlarge, inspire and brighten up the space is to paint colour white adding occasional feature wall, paint handrails in bold paint colours, adding coloured and big art/frames. Painting and decorating the staircase in such bold colour is brave, and it will look outstanding, guaranteed. The only worry is that present wall colour may not necessarily work with it. You could add little more and paint walls - that would certainly be a bonus. A blue would nail it. Good luck with your project! Hi Laura, sounds like a great project.

In terms of table size and number of lights, 3 to 4 is good. Lighting of the whole space should be considered. Being an open plan, you may want to have a combination of ceiling, wall and floor or table lights that can be used together or separately. This will give you an opportunity to create anything from ambiance lighting for a cosy evening to a bright working space should you need it.

Having a glass staircase and pendants may prove to be too much. To soften the look, you could have a bespoke lampshade (we can advise on shape and size) in a fabric or even wallpaper of your choice. Having this light on a dimmer will make it a great entertaining spot. Let us know if we can be of further help.
