What would you do with this fireplace?

House is 1950's ex-council house and this is in the living room. Should we tear it out? It's pretty ugly. I've been wondering whether adding a proper mantelpiece, sticking some slate or some tiles over the very ugly bottom bit and then painting the whole thing black would improve things - we are thinking of painting this room dark blue and changing the carpet - so disregard the current decor. I would also like some kind of fire - are electric fires totally naff? I was thinking of a fake wood burning stove type fire? There's no gas connection. I would like a real wood burning stove but I have 2 small children. Or should we just tear it out and replace? I like clean simple modern designs.

    Hi Fiona, you could still use the space to create a centre piece. We renovated an old fireplace in Bath and gave it a very modern twist. The darker alcove works to draw the eye.
