Protecting SS sink from scratching

Hi,

we have just had a stainless steel sink fitted recently but have found it to scratch very easily....is there any way to limit scratches and maintain the sink?

Stainless steel is quite soft and does scratch easliy. Use a washing up bowl, never wash up directly in the sink without the bowl. We also have a rubber drainer on top of the draining board part.

Never use a bowl. The bottom of the bowl isn't smooth and scratches the sink. Wash direct in the sink.

A lot of people ask how easy it is to clean stainless steel [worktops]. The simple answer is 'very easy' and GEC Anderson recommend the microfibre cloths that have been mentioned by a number of contributors, in combination with cold water. Simply wipe down the worktop after use to prevent build up of streaks or marks - especially, in hard water areas. And that's it! Some words of caution probably should be taken into account before making a final decision as to whether stainless steel suits your lifestyle. Stainless steel is prone to attracting finger prints and marks and so the key here is to regularly wipe down the surface so as not to let dirt and extraneous material to build up in the first place. Another thing to consider is that stainless steel will scratch and mark over time. This is perfectly normal! Scratches and marks will build up over time, creating a unique patina appearance. Simply ignore them. Your stainless steel worktop will outlast pretty much every other alternative worktop material and should provide you with several decades of useful service.

Update - alabaster painted oak units, oak worktop, (curved end units and worktop corners) belfast sink, 1100 stainless steel rangemaster porcelain large high gloss ivory 600x600 floor tiles, ivory grout - please see attached look book just still to decide on shade of sage on walls - deciding between F&B Mizzle, Vert De Terre, Ball Green and Cooking Apple Green... Also metro sub/way tiles on walls - whether to go for a sage tile or cream/white... The dining room area off the kitchen will have oak parquet floor which will follow through from hall and will also be in the lounge but Im thinking of following the wall colour in the kitchen through to the dining room for continuity and potentially painting the chimney brest or wall furthest away from and facing the kitchen a darker green complementary colour... Thoughts please

We do supply Corian (and similar products) to customers, but even our Corian rep urges caution with hot pans etc - it can mark, and heat damage will be expensive to put right! You can get thin metal protective "strips" to put on the surface if you want somewhere to put pots and pans. If you can find it, there are some really fantastic ceramic worktops coming onto the market - there are a few German and Austrian manufacturers (Including my absolute favourite, Strasser in Austria) which are fantastic wrt heat, scratching, machining - for me, they are the ultimate worksurface at the moment. We chose to put our sink in our island as it was the best place for it. Our island is very long so it can accommodate the sink on one end with a clear space on the other end for seating - I am personally very against having a hob in the island as it will send splatters of hot oil etc. across the island and people (kids) sitting there. I also think the current trend for open shelves is odd - I always think they just end up looking cluttered (beyond the perfected curated pages of houzz), and everything will get dusty and oily if near the hob. One thing that we did in our kitchen was include a defined tiled area around the island - I love it and everyone comments on it. It may help add that little bit of extra in your design. (please ignore 1) our bar stools - we still need to get 2 more! and 2) the hole on the left where our broken wine fridge is waiting to be replaced!)

I agree with Daisy. Never use a washing up bowl, it'll scratch it. Wash directly in the sink, accept that scratches are a thing. The more scratches there are, the less worse they look

Thanks for all the replies, I'm very used to just washing directly in the sink. I've seen Lakelend doing a cushion mat sort of thing online, which claims to prevent scratches and breaking of dishes should they fall. Are they any good?

I guess it does make sense to just use it and the scratches will sort of just look the part but doesn't that dull the shine? We have one of those smooth sinks with no ridges and therfore very easy to notice scratches, etc...

Also, there is a linen finish sink available (a bit late now I know as you already have the sink). The finish is as the word says 'like linen' so this doesn't show the scratches up as much as a smooth finish. There are different grades of stainless steel and you'll probably find that the cheaper sinks might mark easier.

Ahh, that should explain it even though the Cost of this sink was greater than the previous one. Our previous sink was of very good quality and you could tell just by looking at it that it was solid. But the makes also vary according to brands so that could be another explanation. This time I think, because we tried to go for the modern sleek look,we compromised on quality maybe and didn't look into the quality of the sink greatly.

Hey, ho, Not to worry, it's done now, lesson learnt, will use for now and look to changing it after a year or two if it Isnt too good.

You can get a stainless steel 'basket' that sits in the sink on rubber legs to avoid scratches & chips - we have one for our ceramic sink. Been using it for a year & the sink still looks great. Think we got it from Amazon. Only downside is that you do need to use more water to fill the sink enough for washing the dishes with the basket in place.

Then use the ceramic sink instead,it's easy to clean and no need to be afraid of the scratch.

stainless steel will scratch but form a patina in time. if you really dislike scratches get a bottle of barkeeper's friend and buffnup the steel.
