At what point do you hire an interior designer
Comments (21)ksgrant . . . . . I was on a very tight budget, but knew I was going to hit a wall and need a designer consult. I had space plan drawings for my kitchen and used the design services (free w/ cabinet purchase, CAD) to complete the space. I also had very specific inspiration photos that reflected the same perspective as the space, i.e. window placement over sink (light), position of appliances, prep sink. I paid close attention to how I intended to use the space, needed prep space for a least three cooks. I read a lot about the "triangle". Mostly I spent a lot of time with the plans and considering materials in relation to the inspiration photos. For instance, I wanted soapstone but it was out of budget and went with honed black granite to get the same look. Another example is that I wanted the kitchen to have some of the same elements as the old one to reflect the period of the house, so I had venting added to cabinet piece in front of the sink. Houzz was not available at the time, I would have posted some plans/materials here for more input and suggestion. Feel free to email me at tirgoddess.com for any other questions, happy to help. More than anything, take your time and do your research....See MorePOLL: Do you have a cleaner?
Comments (26)I share the care of my 92 yr old mother with my sister (who is 70 herself). I still go Out to work albeit part time and I have my own grandchildren.yother has no other carers except "her girls" and we do everything in the house & garden. So, yes, I do have a cleaner for my own 4 storey Victorian townhouse as I figure if mum won't have paid help them I have to. My cleaner is an angel but her life is made easier as it's now Only My husband and I rattling around at home and do don't make much mess anyway....See MorePOLL: How often do you redecorate in your home?
Comments (9)Angelboyman nails it for me. We have been in this house 32 years and have done everything at least once from renewing the roof and windows to digging out the floor, putting in a damp course and installing central heating. The ensuing recoration has been a "classic" traditional colour-scheme of soft barley and sage green to suit the era the house was built. It suits us down to the ground and we are not distracted by outdated decor. We give it a lick of paint when it needs it. The house is the only one in this Victorian terrace to have retained many original features such as picture rails, dado, marble fireplace and ceiling rose, but internal doors were sadly a victim of the dreaded Fire Certificate and other "improvements", which also mean all the features inc. windows and front door were not retained as we would have wished and we have also had to cover the pine floors we so lovingly restored with carpets and vinyl because they needed protecting from high-heels and countless sandy feet. We also dopted the German fashion for wood-chipping and painting what were pretty uneven walls. They have been over-painted so often, the texture is barely visible and it has withstood the test of time. We are in a seaside location, so there has been heavy wear and tear from a couple of generations of holiday making friends and relatives as well as our own family. The kitchen is the biggest challenge being north-facing with practically no light and whilst it was being excavated we made the bathroom into a temporary kitchen, but never restored it, so now we have two showers and three toilets in the house, but no bath! The room is a designated "laundry room" which is also a tool store, boiler and hobby room. The house will soon be on the market, so redecoration will not be our choice. The new caretakers of this happy home will have a blank canvas. Good luck to them! I just hope they retain the features and the character....See MorePOLL: Do you stick to a budget when renovating?
Comments (5)I'm a single mum in a council house so the notion of employing builders is laughable to me. However, I love a beautiful home so I am doing it room by room: I spend six months over autumn and winter pouring over and sourcing ideas, so I have an overall, detailed plan. Within that I begin to buy 'pocket money' details (a picture frame, an inexpensive cushion) month by month whilst squirrelling away a budget for larger items (and yes, there are months when the kids wonder if there will ever be anything else but baked beans for tea). In the warmer months, I can get down to the big jobs like wallpapering or painting, upcycling or even installing a new piece of furniture (a certain Swedish outlet does very well out of me.) I have lived with kids beds and desks cluttering up the living room for months while I gather everything together for the final 'pulling together'. For a bit of temporary inconvenience, this helps me stick rigidly to a budget but allows flexibility....See MoreMichelle S
