If this was your kitchen/ family room how would you lay it out?

The kitchen in plans is just there for illustration, there will be a single door in from hall and internal bi folds in from lounge.......tell me how you would layout this space if it were yours....dimensions are 3.45m x 7.3m........thanks everyone x

Door from hall bottom left of kitchen - island horizontally placed and horizontal line of cabinetry on top wall - folding sliding doors opening back to side of hall cabinet to join living areas up.

That is what I had in my head as the best use of the space one plan, but we have been saving for years for this extension and I've lost my confidence having seen too many kitchens and styles and layouts! really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Thank you very much

Hi @Paul McCann, I am not sure what's you budget is, your plan for the property and if it's worth the work but flipping the functions from the front to the back of the house could be a good solution to embrace the orientation and balance the layout. Smaller room at the front, less deep, will maximise the North's light. Keep the services like laundry room, toilette and stairs in the middle where it's going to be dark as you will use these spaces for the least amount of time. Place the kitchen and dining area at the back to get all the light on the room you will use the most. Here are a couple of quick options for an alternative layout: Op1 is keeping the stairs where it is currently and do not touch the first floor. Op2 is moving the stairs that will effect also the first floor Please bare in mind that with no dimensions and very little idea of baring walls and structure of the house, location and surrounding this is just a fun exercise!

Thank you so much Jonathan for taking the time to draw your ideas. Sorry I couldn't get back to you before, I worked double shift yesterday. I really like the way you envisage the upstairs; moving the utility up a floor makes sense to me although my other half might need persuading. If we went with a utility area (as opposed to a room) we could add a window above the washer & dryer to bring in some light. Otherwise the upstairs landing would be very dark with no natural light. Have to say I do like this layout. Great to see your thoughts on the downstairs too. Moving the kitchen to the front of the house is sth we haven't given much thought to - I suppose we'd prefer to keep it at the back and link to garden - but it definitely good to get your perspective. Thanks again.

Hi Lovely, I suggest you go for the L shaped sofa, whilst it is a good idea to separate the space, it still is one big space. So 2 sofa's may feel a bit too much especially as you have low ceilings. You can always add an armchair if you need more seating? I would add a curtain something in a natural linen would look lovely and soften the edges and make it feel homely. In terms of the cable, its not massively visible on the pictures but I would suggest to have it removed. I would leave the fireplace wall as it is as it is a feature. I do think you need to get a bit creative by adding textures, wood logs, candles and maybe even faux flowers somewhere. On a side note I would paint the walls a warmer colour. The white walls look quite stark compared to the fireplace which is a bit heavier. I think adding a warmer shade, say in stone or mushroom will actually lighten up the fireplace area as the contrast between the two areas will be less. I really hope that helps! how about moving the wardrobe opposite the door - right next to the boxed in pipes, and then making the cot (sleeping area) after that - near the window? That way, the room seems smaller when you come in, but opens up after that (to the right). Also, i was looking into making a hot air balloon theme - painting the walls light blue with a cloud motif, and a hot air balloon light fixture. Will that make the room look too small? And can you suggest how to decorate the wardrobe so it looks more interesting - put on a large tree motif, hot air balloons - grass... some ideas i was thinking of - any other ideas or input appreciated!

I might consider putting the kitchen in the former lounge and then having a long lounge diner in the extension with a large opening between the living room and kitchen
