Carrara clash! Paint suggestions please

My new marble kitchen worktop is way more grey than I thought, and is clashing with cabinet colour (Paint and Paper Library Sand 2), which now looks yellow.

Upset as this has cost a fair bit, so think only option is to paint the cabinets.

Was going for the Rose Uniacke look, but know I know why she gets paid £££ and I don't.

Can anyone suggest a cabinet paint colour that would pull this all together? Wall colour is same as cabinets, but I can't change that.

Planning on a brass kitchen tap and a stainless steel/brass cooker.

Just a thought - a slightly different way of looking at it, but maybe changing the handles to something with a grey tone - maybe a pewter would tie in the Carrara and the cabinets?

Hello `Sarah, I think the kitchen is fantastic!!! Please keep it!!! So I have some suggestions.. I think it has some great elements.. The design and colour of the cupboards plus those tiles are really fabulous, also love the floor too.. I'd keep it all!!! The top cupboards are gr8 without glass and your image is very different and dare I say not nearly so interesting.. Maybe you can celebrate the uniqueness of it! Minnie is right to suggest moving the cabinets closer to the ceiling (it has been lowered in part but I would leave it as is) easily done without damage and you can move the boiler in line with them.. .. This is a gr8 idea as it will feel a little more open and spacious.. you could then paint above the tiles a lovely warm chalky white or off white.. and any other wall areas.. It will balance the units out and I would definitely keep the colour the same here top and bottom... If you don't want to change the current configuration too much and keep costs down, I would buy a free standing chrome range oven like Smeg dual fuel and extractor Aeg angled hood and fit in same place as current oven.. Dualit toaster and kettle Bugatti Vera in chrome.. Angled extractor hood Aeg and a smeg 50's white fridge would be nice here too! With the fridge I feel it could stand at the end of the counter top.. Leave the sink exactly as it is and the boiler too, all you then need to do is put a cabinet shell and door on the front of the opening where fridge was and paint it and the bits of cabinet that are white to the shade of yellow and voila! Anther storage space for the dishwasher. I would move that metal shelf or add another if you like it.. .. Add a polycarbonate pendant Creatures by Nigel Coates which would look amazing with the kitchen.. Also the kitchen is definitely not past it!!! Off white or very pale grey, then you won't clash with the floor, keep the ceiling white for the height. Then try matching the curtains to the floor, keep the plain as patterns will also clash with the rug. You could try another accent colour or two to go with the red when choosing cushions, lampshades etc. Greens will work well as will mustard. Maybe a feature wall, go bold with the colour to match the rug??

I think keep the wood effect if it's not a mahogany colour (can't quite tell?) if it is, then replace it with a more contemporary wood fascia instead which reallly works with a mid grey tone. The grey woodwork on the door will be soft against the brickwork. You can either have white on the front block or a pale grey to match it all together. Thinking more the vintage grey rather than the very dark grey on the walls because of the side stones.

Look at photo bolow, please. Cabinets look not white-white , but not bad at all. Look like yours. If you get a dark flooring i believe it will work.

I agree with the first comment. Change the knobs to pewter or steel colour. For me it's the brown that is making the doors look more yellow.

I must confess, on my screen they don't look yellowy at all. When going with the grey marble, I too would go for a pewter or steel knob too and matching taps. Not sure about the brass, that will definitely add a warm tone and brass knobs won't look good on the cabinets.

For me, taps and knobs need to match.

I know that you probably will not be changing the kitchen now for some time, but for others, the rule of thumb is lay the floor first, then the cabinets. If you don't and you want to change the cabinets, to a different layout, you have to change the floor as it doesn't extend under the cabinets.

I see what you mean and agree with previous comments that the knobs would look better pewter.
As regards the cabinets, Little Greene have some lovely grey shades which would complement the marble eg Fescue

Hello, thank you all for the thoughtful suggestions. And for Daisy for saying it looks fine!

Yes pewter knobs and taps could work better... These are actually very old tarnished brass one which were going to be polished up.

But my partner is set on brass taps and knobs, and has brass fittings throughout. I have seen marble and brass work together, but maybe with a darker cupboard...

Thinking dark green or navy?? Would that work? Or the grey above does look quite nice, thanks for those pics.

Floor is oak parquet... Fairly natural tone...

I also agree that I would look at changing the handles first. Painting the cabinets again is a very costly option. Whilst I can see what you are saying I think that you might be surprised how much difference this will make. I would look at Nickel, or Satin Chrome. If you are dead set on Brass have a look for Satin Brass as it is lighter and has a lovely finish.

Hi. I think the dark blow sounds nice. The green I think may look a little off with the creamy White of the walls and the grey on the worktop.

You could consider having 3D imagery of your finished space so you can see the changes the colours make on each other. It would also show how they interact with other elements of the space as styling is included in the rendering - showing a finished space as it would be once completed.

I have added a render of a recent project in a dark blue plus the finished room to see what you can do.

Hi. I also can't see the yellow undertone in the cream on my screen! I also think brass can work with the cabinet colour. If it was me I'd finish the kitchen and then decide. I don't think it's the perfect combination but a couple of accessories in creamy white and grey could tie it in more? Will you be having any kind of splashback? If you do decide to paint now, I think I'd opt for green which is stunning with marble and brass (and wood!) as per the DeVOL pic. Why can't you paint the walls out of interest? The Plain English kitchen however shows the green with a very similar wall colour to yours

To most of us it's still a stunning kitchen. I don't know if this helps, but here goes.

There is an effect called simultaneous contrast which describes how colours affect each other. The cupboard colour (sand 2) may not appear particularly warm or beige, until it appears next to the very cool grey/violet carrara marble worktop. The juxtaposition of these two colours means that the cool undertones of the marble appear exaggerated, as do the warm undertones of the sand 2 cupboards. Things are affected by their opposites, and the effect is most apparent when you are looking at complementary colours. If you look at the Paint and Paper colour chart, the sand 2 has yellow undertones and the carrara marble looks a bit like salt 4 which has violet undertones. If you compare the grey carrara marble with for example the floor, the floor is a warmer grey, the marble a cooler violet grey.

I would be tempted to introduce a really deep toned wall colour to act as a third dimension, but to this after the floor is fitted as that will change things again. The floor will look stunning and hopefully help to tie it all together. Sorry for long post.

Minnie, yes! That's the green kitchen I was thinking of. I wonder if we could pull off such a bold statement... It's all pretty light and bright at the moment. Don't want to repaint the walls as they've just been done, and figure the few cabinets would be easier to change.

Good advice to wait until the floor etc is in. No splashback, just a 5cm strip of the same marble going around.

Thanks so much for saying it's still a lovely kitchen, ColourHappy! It is quite gut-wrenching to spend so much and have it not look quite right... And many thanks for explaining what's going on here colourwise... Makes total sense. We sort of knew we'd have that problem with the Sand and marble, but was steering away from grey-toned paint (as surrounded by concrete brutalist buildings) and wanted something light and bright and that would work with brass and the oak floors. I found the pale neutrals from Paint and Paper a bit restrictive... Although have used Slate 2 and Wattle 2 in bedrooms and probably should have used one of those here, too. The other problem is that the marble is supposed to be Carrara Bianco, the whitest... But maybe that's the colour trickery at play.

I hope the brass finishes work, as the tap will be quite pricey. Going for unlacquered for a less blingy look. I just hope it doesn't look 80s, like the kitchen we've just pulled out!

I think it seems to look ok but I would look at a greyer shade personally maybe Dulux Mixer Grey Steel 4 which is a very pale nearly white grey. Minnie I like that grey/white bowl where is that from please ?
