Extractor fan -Confused!

Hi all,

I have bought a canopy style extractor fan 80cm to put in a top box above the hob. So hidden away. Problem is it is too wide, 30.2cm. The box depth is 30cm.

The problem is, is that my fitter is saying that I need one which is significantly narrower as he has to leave a lip all the way around the base of the unit for the fan to attach to. He mentioned 20cm deep! I haven't seen any canopy extractor fan so narrow. Am I missing something? Has he got it wrong?

Please help. It's holding up completing the kitchen.

Normally when you want to hide an extractor you purchase a built in one - it fits behind a unit specially built with a door attached. Like this one:-

I would suggest you contact whomever you purchased the kitchen from and order the right unit with an built in extractor and return the other one, which is not supposed to fit in a cupboard.

Hi, just catching up on this. Just got a 73 cm integrated fan - it's an Airforce one. Powerful enough but noisy- but probably no noisier than other chimney hoods I've had. Loving the Rangemaster Nexus though! Thanks for advice!

There are some ceiling extractors that are built into a downlight so if you do have access above the ensuite then it can be ducted to outside. Most bathroom extractors also have a timer and or condensation fan over run so they also need to have a permanent live feed as well as a switch live (ie from your lights) so your electrics may need to be slightly modified which means you'll need an electrician as this will involve 'part P' of building regs, this can incur a lot of extra costs if your fuseboard isn't up to date (ie rcd protection for lighting circuits), so if opening the window has been fine up to now, i'd probably stay with it.

Give Falmec a try, they have some beautiful and effective recirculating extractors in the style you're looking for. If positioned in relation to your height they won't get in the way when working at the hob but when compared to vented hobs they will always block the view/sight lines more.

Hi Anisha, with BORA you can recirculate or duct to the outside. Ducting is the best for taking the smells away but!!! & its a big but our recirculating systems are very good. I am 100% sure you would be very surprised at how they perform in taking the cooking odours away & cleaning the air.

Hi.

Yes it was a canopy we had bought. I think we are going to buy a slimmer canopy and just persevere with putting it in a unit. And advice if anyone has done this would be appreciated.

It's a shame the first one you bought was too wide - there's lots about that are slimmer for just this type of installation - will be so neat when done as virtually invisible but still so efficient and much easier to clean than a ceiling one !!
