Wood burning stove flue help
Hello all looking for some help and expertise about wood burners please. :)
We are about to do an extension to the rear of our house which will be 8m out from the back wall (filling in a u shape so it is actually protruding about 5.5m from the existing wall) and 5.5m wide. This will be our lounge room and we are having an orangery style with 4.5m bifold doors one side and a lantern roof. We are thinking we want some sort of fire in here both for heat and for a focal point. We have no gas so it has boiled down to a choice between an electric living flame style fire and installing a woodburner. I've attached a couple of houzz pics of the kind of styles we like, we kind of have a mix of transitional and country styles.
We are kind of leaning towards a woodburner as we do like real wood fires and have really missed our open fire since we moved.
The question is (and here I am less than clued up about regulations etc;) is what are the options we would have for a flue for a wood burner? We don't really want the view of our lantern roof partly obscured or ruined by a huge flue poking up above the glass. I presume it would depend on placement of the stove? The first idea was to put the stove at the far end of the room between two windows (like third pic above) possibly with a shallow fake wall / chimney built to accommodate it. Or possibly we have it on the existing RH wall next to the bifold doors but I am concerned this might look a bit skew / odd as it wouldn't be central.

6 years agoI would consider where you want your focal point. I like the picture above with the fireplace on the far wall. However, none of the furniture is faced to look at the focal point.
Also, consider where you are going to have the television, as the furniture needs to be pointing in the direction of viewing. (It's not advisable to have a T.V mounted on a wall above a log burner due to the heat )
As you have glass on three walls and no fourth wall, the placement of furniture is particularly difficult due to the lack of available wall space. All the pics above have a lot more wall space than your layout.
I really like the window seats by the fireplace, but again, all you have in there is seating.
I'd ensure that the far right corner is large enough to have a corner unit in it before the Bi-Folds start so that you can focus both towards the fireplace ahead and the T.V slightly to the right. Also not convinced about windows on the left wall which would then be above a sofa.

Comments (19)Hi there.. Yes they are bought by the size of the area you need to heat... We lived in the Shetland isles.for 5 years, and was an old craft house. And mostly to heat the hole house.. When it was hot,, it was hit and such a warm and welcoming feature on our most chilly and windy days... But the things is it can also be hard work.. Maybe not as much if you are in a warmer area. We could freely get pallets which helped immensely... And we tried to remove as many nails as we could see.. Otherwise these got caught in the grate at the bottom... But I would still say hard work . We got coal about £10 a bag, peat was the best for heat, but that started to get a little dearer to. All in all we paid about £2500 with the fire and fitting. About 3 years ago now. Comments (2)Here is the planning departments response......... "You would need planning permission for the wood burning stove if it requires a new external flue. If the flue is located internally within an existing chimney stack then you would not require planning permission. If a new external flue is proposed then you can include this within one single application for the doors and flue." So, next question is how do I know if I have a flue or even an existing chimney - seems stupid question to ask. Been in this house for nearly 3 years. There is a 'chimney breast' in the lounge but the previous owners had a plugged in electric fire. The house is from around 1950 - old bungalow. There are no obvious chimneys outside - there are full dormers above. Comments (22)The fireplace is Yorkshire stone - the patterned wallpaper on chimney breast is grey/white, remaining walls white with a hint of grey. I agree re a plain sofa Jonathan but just a bit stumped re colour. I suppose a cream or beige would match curtains but thats the colour of the sofa I’m dumping after 16 years....See Morebuzzmummy
6 years agoThanks very much Math for your comments. Firstly there will be no tv unit in here to worry about...we have a separate snug/ family room. Yes furniture placement is not exact on this pic - I just popped a few sofas in to give the effect!! Our house is surrounded by fields and lovely views especially the side with the bifolds so we wanted as many windows as possible to appreciate that. But I do quite see that we will end up with having sofas in front of the LH window wall. Partly why I thought of adding the built in window seats to add extra seating when required without taking up more useable wall space. As it is fairly wide I'm hoping that pulling the sofas in from the wall will mean it won't look too odd.
I think it makes sense to have the fire on the far wall if we can as otherwise we will kind of have two focal points with the windows/ bifolds and then the fire. Unless we put the fire in the corner where you have put the unit? Saw quite a cool one on here last night ...
Contemporary Living Room · More InfoThe issue is if we put a wood burner on that end wall how high the flue would have to be and would it look weird if you could see it through the lantern roof? Also what special things would we have to do at the build stage to comply with heat regs etc?
